My thoughts exactly. Except the same can be said for the previous two albums as well.
There are three sides to every story. My side, your side, and the truth. And no one is lying. Memories shared serve each one differently

What? You needed someone else to help you decide whether you like something or not? lol

Well, I need some help to put everything into perspective. I tend to be overwhelmed by anything new that Prince makes and it takes some time for me to make up my mind. I know that anything Prince makes will finally get it's deserved place in my life but it has to settle in with all the things I already had.

All of the discussions on these threads here can be related to this confusion in my mind. You know: 'Is it better than 3121, Musicology, etc." I agree with TheAStarr: "The album is a grower." I'll let the album grow on me for the time being and wait to see where it will end up...

I totally agree. i dont mind sparking a debate here. I would like to start a new thread but for fear of being locked by the mods.. its here. And here I go:

I hate to say this guys but Bewdy doesnt just have a point, I think he's right. I think we should all accept Prince's output quality is nowhere near what it used to be.

However, I will attempt to justify in a lucid, coherent rational manner.. Here goes:

NPS, Emancipation, Musicology, 3121 and Planet earth, the list goes on.. most albums since the Gold Experience (with the exception of TRC - a masterpiece of non-commercial genius) are in my humble opinion average albums. A once or twice listen, perhaps a tweek of the eyebrow occasionally, and then never again.

The main problem for me, is the severe lack of a coherent album feel, since the disappearance of the original NPG band.

The album songs sound like they were recorded at different places, at different times, with different artists, and then - the no.1 flatliner for me - a song with all instruments performed completely by prince.

At this point, this is where the production really sucks. Take for example the song planet earth. Doing well up until the bridge. Horns come in.. played by (i assume) prince! Horns!! on a goddamn synth keyboard! they sound totally unrealistic, cheap and rushed - back of a bedroom, like he couldnt be bothered to wait to finish the mix and couldnt afford to hire/pay for ppl to play real horns.

Next up - track 3 Somewhere here on earth. How rediculous. The track actually opens with fake flutes. synth flutes! what a waste of time. Cheap, quick, crass production. He is a multimillionnaire and he cant be bothered to get a real band together for the album mix. Lots of albums have suffered from this. Before emancipation he never did that. He had a REAL band that played the music. A bassist playing bass.. not prince running his fingers over a keyboard.

Yes prince sometimes lets others contribute a little bit - but just Renato on a piano solo and fake everything else doesnt work for me.

No wonder some of you want to hear these songs live. Even I thought, wow, at least some of these songs might be good live. Because the studio mix is appaulling.

Couple that with really bad or basic and even childlike lyrics at times, and not very memorable or legendary melodies.. it all makes for wave after wave of rushed, mediocre tripe that only means something to prince, to satisfy his ego.

Future Baby mama... another prime example. Just listen to those drum and percussive sounds.. all fake. From a korg synth. And those sounds he used with wendy and lisa many times.. 20 years ago! its like he hasnt even upgraded his synth.

I dont like his new stuff. They are not albums. They are a malaise. A something for everyone approach. yuck.

Prince would do a lot better to severly cut back on his output, stop churning his every thought into a half baked song, and spend a lot more time working on a coherent album, classing up his lyrics, and classing up the production and throw away that rediculous, outdated korg synth he is using and get a real band to record and produce the album. Fake sounds trying to be real is just the worst.

until prince makes that decision.. we r going to be bombarded with mediocre/ rushed everything. Quality not quantity is the rule. The most basic rule you learn in first grade.

There you have it. My opinion.. in a not-so-small nutshell.

co-sign.

its a shame that after being away from the org for so long, what lured my back was the politics forum. commenting on a new record/performance was just a side note.

amen.

I do wish that he'd co-write with Wendy & Lisa again, rather than just perform with them again.

Comparing the lyrics of 'Mountains' to the lyrics of 'Planet Earth' is almost like comparing somebody before and after a stroke.

I guess millions of people have already downloaded the entire album.
What's the point in giving it for free one week before the relaese in the stores (allowing everyone to download it via peer-to-peer or internet blogs starting on Sunday 15)?
Apart fron the media hype, PE is doomed to be one of the the most unsuccessful album in P career. I doubt the sales will reach 500.000 copies all around the world.

Planet Earth is Prince 15 years ago. Its got Rock, ballards, and is packed full of examples of Prince having fun - enjoying his music. Its got all the elements of Prince Old Skool. The opening track is awesome. What a way to start and guitar flows from that so the listener is hit with a pithy fun pop song with some fantastic guitar segments...the whole album blends together so well - he is taking us on a journey, like so much of his old ear albums do -

Its going to be a Prince Classic up there with Purple Rain, SOTT to mention just two. I cant think of any fan bemoaning the title track if Prince decides to play that in August.....i would almost guarentee it will blow your mind. I know that i for one, am keeping all my fingers and toes crossed that he plays this in the O2 arena.

Its a shame Prince didnt go to one of those "save the planet" gigs held last weekend and belt out Planet Earth and then leave.....it would of been sensational.

I always wondered if mr P logged in to this site or HQ - hope he does and is reading this and smiling! It must b intreguing to read how fans react to his songs whether individually or collectively. Difference of opinion is staggering but also fasinating. I love reading all the 2pence (2 cents) worth. There are so many knowledgeable people out there. Its good to learn, to grow....

Take it easy one and all....Peace and B wild!

Hi, i just wanted to say that this album is not quality.

I've loved Prince since i was 10 (now a grand old 36) i've bought every album/t-shirt (no perfumes though) and this just isn't up to standard.

For once musically Prince sounds bored. The arrangement are unimaginative (ok Planet Earth has a hell of alot going on)..... where are the great pop songs?...

He is in a perfect time in his career... his profile is super high...about to drive us all mad with the summer shows... everyone name dropping him.... I hate to say it but the album is dull !!

sob sob.....

I'm off to listen to Rebirth Of The Flesh.....

The only 3 tracks I don't like are:

Chelsea Rodgers (i'd love it if it weren't for the vocals)
Future Baby Mama
Mr. Goodnight

I love the overall rock/organic sound to it all... very nice imo.

No music has been groundbreaking in many, many years. That's just the way it is. And don't respond with some hip hop album that's "groundbreaking." lol

I just listened again to the MSN stream, I gotta say this album is wonderful. I feel bad for people who don't like this music, you'd think they've lost all taste. To bring it down for not being "groundbreaking" is ridiculous. You're telling me you just can't enjoy good songs? Does everything have to be When Doves Cry? This is one tight, 45 minute album. Sounds just as good (to me) as any of Prince's albums. I knew the album was going to have mixed reviews when some fans were bashing a fine song like "Guitar." If you can't even remotely like that song, well, good luck to you. Waahhhh, it's not When Doves Cry! Wahhh!

Who says it has to be When Doves Cry? I mean, really -- who says that? I get really tired of people assuming that, because someone is able to maintain a certain degree of objectivity with respect to Prince's product, they must be living in the past, or "lost all taste," or -- shit, I'll just say it -- stupid.

I have every album Prince has done. (And I bought most of them within days of their release -- all the way back to the beginning.) I like most of them -- and out-and-out love others. There are only a couple that I don't play -- and even on those, I've found gems that redeem them somewhat.

But I have to say that Planet Earth is not up to Prince's usual standard, at least as far as I'm concerned. I'm sorry if that offends you -- but it just isn't. The lyrics are trite, the music is pedestrian.

There is nothing wrong with simplicity -- in fact, done right, simplicity can be very elegant -- and is often more difficult to achieve than something lush and overblown. (It requires an ability to edit oneself -- something a lot of artists lack.) A number of the songs on this album aren't simple, they're simple-minded. I think a lot of people don't recognize the distinction -- and they're pissed off the ones who do.

What PurpleHouse said!

I am getting resigned to the idea that the heights that were reached with The Rainbow Children and the ONA tour will probably never be reached again.

Who knows, after NPS and Rave, combined with the tours during that period, I was pretty hopeless and yet he surprised me big-time with TRC.

I think the fact remains that Prince needs some strong-willed and talented band members to produce great music. Sonny and Michael challenged him musically. John Blackwell & Co. seemed to do the same during the TRC/ONA era.

3121 and this album each have a couple decent moments, which separates them from the complete yawnfest that was Musicology, but this album is still a let-down after where he was 5 years ago. Overall, it's an improvement over the last two efforts, but there's still too much elevator and not enough elevatin' IMHO.

Yup... I agree there's always hope. But I think that after Rave (and perhaps the abandoned High project), he kind of threw up his hands after trying to be commercial and said, why bother?

Since then, he's had the "comeback" of the Grammy's, Super Bowl, etc., combined with modest commercial success for some of the recent projects.

So I just have a sense that he may more comfortable with where he currently stands than at the time of TRC/ONA.

But who knows, he's nothing if not unpredictable.

Heard the album a few times since Sunday , heres my ratings :

Planet Earth : good opener , he sometimes likes to challenge his listeners with the 1st track doesnt he
( I'm thinking ATWIAD , Parade , Lovesexy , even TRC's opener ) and this is a big statement musically
and lyrically . I don't love it as much as most seem to but its fine : 7

Guitar : great to hear the riff from this all over the news the past few days , great rock track ,
his best in the 00s for sure , and after Planet Earth which some might call hard work this is easy-listening
effective rock : 8

Somewhere here on earth : Pleasant enough ballad , I lose interest a bit as the song goes but not bad at all : 6

The 1 U Wanna C : Great pop song , catchy as anything , and if Prince wants to reacquaint old fans and gain
new ones with this album he needs to remind people that he can do simple , infectious songs like this as well as
more thought-provoking stuff : 9

Future baby mama : Firstly , GREAT vocals on this , love them , very very nice musically too , the " I Hate U "
similarity of bits of it bugs me slightly but Prince's singing makes me forgive that : 8

Mr .Goodnight : seems to be lots of people hating on this initally , don't know why , I think its cool as hell , great
smooth rap from Prince , silky seductive song , fine by me : 7

All the midnights in the world : A stinker on 1st hearing it , it improves with repeated listening , but still by far
the weak point on a very good album thus far . Prince's vocals and the jarring piano in the first 30 seconds annoy
though and I can see any casual listeners hitting the skip button without giving this song much of a chance : 4

Chelsea Rodgers : Fun song , Shelby's vocals dont annoy me as I heard Prince singing throughout the song just
as much as her to be honest . I don't love the track by any means but I can't honestly say its bad either : 7

Lion Of Judah : good track , bit of a mish-mash for me but fine enough : 6

Revelation : Jaunty fun pop song , a breath of fresh air after the downbeat LOJ : 7

Overall I'd give the album a 7.5 / 10 .

Having given it a few listens , its definitely superior to Musicology and 3121 , not sure how I'd rate it compared to his
entre back catalogue but I'd say its his best album of the 00s easily . The rock songs actually rock ( unlike say Fury ) ,
the ballads seduce and actually have choruses ( unlike Satisfied / On The Couch ) , it shows more ambition and daring
that anything he's done since TRC , even the filler songs are of a superior quality than his last few albums . Well done
Prince also for bookending the album with 2 songs with important messages in these times of war and climate change .
Obviously he wanted to show all sides to his arsenal with serious and light-hearted lyrics , and as ever a variety of
different styles . My mate whose not a particular Prince fan heard the album and said he liked it , there were 3 or 4 songs
that really caught his attention and the rest of it was " grand background music " , which from a non-fan isnt too bad an opinion .
I'd be amazed if the giveaway doesnt result in him getting at least few thousand fans more in for the purple ride in the long-term ,
and as a long-time fan the albums an encouraging sign that he is continuing on an upward curve again musically

The album is simply amazing.

Whether you like every song on the album or not, nobody, I mean nobody, could put out an album with such a diverse collection of songs.

The vast majority of you may think that Mr. Goodnight is absolute garbage. But this song is a perfect example of why I love Prince. Who else would have this song on the same album as Somewhere Here On Earth? The same album as The 1 U Wanna C? Along side a truly epic song like Planet Earth? No one else in music would or could do this.

Most artists don't cover this many genres of music in an entire career, let alone on one album.

To me it is truly remarkable and is what sets Prince apart from everyone else.

Think about it. If this was a debut album from someone, we would be touting them as the second coming, and I guarantee that it would be up (if not win) for album of the year.
He is exactly who we thought he was

Couldn't you have said the same thing though about Rave when it was released?

Personally, I think most great albums have an element of continuity. I don't want to judge PE fully until I have more time to digest it, but the fact that a diverse collection of songs is included isn't necessarily good or bad in and of itself.

One thing is certain to me upon first impression though: it's an improvement over Musicology (probably 3121 as well preliminarily). biggrin
