Musicology - 3 yrs later, what tracks do you consider absolute gems

well?

looking back now, having listened to it for 3 years, knowing the songs by heart and either liking loving or hating them, what is left from all the hype n love
for this album?

to be totally honest it was the first prince album since diamonds and pearls
where i cringed to songs on firts listen.

after giving everything a chance and allowing my excitement over some songs to
make place for either genuine like or just so so-ism i concluded that the only
songs on the album i truly adore are:

"reflection"

lol. that's it. the ones i still like a lot are

"a million days"
"dear mr man"

and a song i sincerely disliked before but learned to love and now play on a
regular basis:

"what do u want me 2 do?"

the rest is imo forgettable fluff, not even half decent. just very bad album
all round imo.

Musicology is an excellent album, with plenty of amazing songs:
Musicology, Illusion coma pimp and circumstance, Reflection r all good tunes.
Call my name, If i was the man in ur life, The marryng kind r outstanding.
Life o' the party and Cinammon girl r bad filler.
In my opinion this cd is overall better than 3121, but PE is by far the best of the three.
In God we trust.

i think "if i was the man in ur life" and "the marrying kind" are the overlooked gems.

the title track is aging better than i expected.

"on the couch" and "dear mr. man" kinda fell into the abyss where i'm concerned.

i think "reflection" is great but i'm burnt out on it. same with "illusion coma pimp and circumstance" - fun song, but i hadda put it in moth balls.

i like "a million days" just fine.

"call my name" yawn

yup, i agree. although cinamon girl hurts badly because it starts out
being such a cool track. i really like the drumming and the guitar on
it. but the 'chorus' is just so incredibly gutwrenchingly horrible,
it makes it impossible for me to listen to the song at all. the rest
of the lyrics aren't very nice either.

going only on the music on this track it could have been quite a cool
song with a bit of a different aproach

I still like the second half of the album very much, that is from "what do u want me 2 do" to "reflection"

I have a problem with reflection being so short though, it´s such a pretty song that I want it to last longer

I would like to add "A Million Days" but hate the way Prince finishes it. It could have been such a perfect pop song but he had to ruin it sad

yeah it's strange how quickly dear mr man became a bore.

i still included it on my songs that i like list but in
reality i never listen to it anymore. i know it's an ok
tune and all and i liked it a lot in the beginning but,
for some reason, it just bores the liver out of me now.

I like Reflection for the unintentionlly humourous "playin' guitar on ma porch" lyric. Come, now. Prince on the porch? Full face of Maybellene and Avon's non-smudge summer range, leather corset, clear heels and stinking of old women's necks? Standing in the Paisley Park car park surrounded by eight sweaty fat-arsed bodyguards yattering in hushed tones to oversized penis substitite portaphones more like. Difficult to fit that into a lyric though.
And it's a shame the production values were brought to you by Hallmark. The live version with just him and Wendy was pretty perfect. Keep Prince away from the control booth buttons, you useless bodyguard cunts and earn your fucking steroid money!

eek So you didn't cringe on first listen to most of New Power Soul or to some of RUTJF!!!!!

confused You didn't cringe at some of the tracks and the voice over on TRC!

wink Come on Musicology really isn't THAT bad at all. It has some great songs on it. However, it isn't the amazing killer album we all keep waiting for.

Reflection, Call My Name, A Million Days are still my favourites from the first listenings! Still love them! cloud9

Still can't understand all the hate against Cinnamon Girl, I've always loved it... hmph!

Also like What Do U Want Me 2 Do? and Musicology and I often play Illusion, Coma, Pimp & Circumstance. music

I hardly listen to the rest though I wouldn't say I hate them... lol
On The Couch is pretty boring -> I prefer Satisfied from 3121! nod
Life O' The Party is the worst one on the album I think... disbelief

blahblah

That's all. smile

lol. strangely, no smile

i remember being very happy and almost running around the room the first
time i listened to The Rainbow Children. it was so different n the songs
where so vibrant and alive. total shock for me. i adored it from the get
go. and i'm probably one of the few people who don't mind the dart voice
at all. i think it's part of the album anyway.

Personally I could live without the voiceover as it detracts from some excellent songs and musicianship. However, I feel there are a few weak tracks on there still. But hey, everybody to their own. It's great how different we all are and what unifies us is the broad musical range covered by Prince!

yup. i was thinking the same thing regarding the reviews of planet earth
which seem to be all over the place.

but that's to be expected from fans of an artist like prince who has all
musical styles covered.

there are people who totally love the parade prince and then there are
those who totally adore the Slaughterhouse prince. etc etc etc.

these days with so many albums and different styles under his belt, he
could release any given album in any given configuration and there are
always going to be people who think it's the best thing ever and those
who think it's absolute shit.

just depends on what part of prince you like the most.

having said that, and having been bitchnig about Musicology, there are
very few prince songs that i just can not listen to at all.

sadly, musicology contains a few, lol. but all in all if i'm bored or
have to wait too long for new prince material i do check out those and
sometimes really enjoy them if just for the fact that they're still a
bit new to me since i hardly ever listen to them.

the only thing that's really held up was Prince's acoustic performance of "Reflection" on the Tavis Smiley show.. the album itself hasn't aged well at ALL, and it only came out 3 years ago!

ok this is just weird
i hadn't listened to it in over a year

i hear the 'oooh' from the start of musicology
and then 'bang'.. open the cd draw and it looks as if
my cd-rom literally took a bite out of my musicology cd

i chucked another cd in and it's playing fine
but that peice of the musicology cd is still in there somewhere eek

so much for that
now i gotta buy myself a new musicology

Aside from some horrible 80s production (Cinnamon Girl) and the aural monstrosity that is 'Life o the party', I think the album has more longevity than 3121.

'Dear Mr Man' and 'Reflection' are both great songs that more than stand the test of time, and'Illusion, Coma...' and the title track are still funky-ass.

If the internet and therefore the ORG had been around during the early 80s we would probably have had people dissing/praising each subsequent album and change of musical direction. Imagine the reaction of fans of 70s R&B who loved For You and Prince when they heard Dirty Mind for the first time!!!!!

My gems that I listen to are:

Musicology, Illusion Coma Pimp and Circumstance, What do U Want Me 2 Do, Marrying Kind-If I Was The Man In Your Life, and ..... Life of the Party.

The others don't have the childlike, energetic, Prince vibe I like and they kind of bore me.
