For anyone who doesn't know, the sunday newspapers typically feature compilation CD's from artists whose back-catalogue has long ago been bought up for a dime under an old slave deal, the likes of which Prince can only imagine in his nightmares OR artists who have so become irrelevant that even a pub-tour is non-viable.
If that's the kind of company he wants to keep while helping the tabloids devalue ALL music, then that's one thing but I would have thought that the tabloids were a thousand miles below the record companies on his list of 'friends and respectors'.

well done Prince! biggrin

... you see alot of fans/fams have been looking at this just from a fan-consumer angle....
lets look at this from an artists angle and see just how clever and wonderful and not so totally out of the blue inspired.....

this is why and how ...

a un-initiated person gets a copy of a paper....(and the mail is a big seller in the uk...lots of middleclass you see) and there is a free cd, they play the cd and may like it.... so they play it again....

and they really like it! If they are in the 12-25 age group (ball-park guess), they may put it on their My Space...as its cool to have unreleased (general) music on there, then all their MS mates can hear it and get the buzz... but if they aint got it they have to buy it!!
Also, those new people will look into the back catalog... just as we all do when we think we found a new thing.... and the life of art goes on.... that why art is so everlasting yet always new.

[ You see prince maybe thinking to give us fams/fans a freebie but I'm sure his clever thought was promotion amd making his name "household" again because in the UK.. hate to tell ya'll, it aint been household for him for a good many years!!! ]

and so then its on my space... people in the US then get to hear more... people in France and China get to hear more.....any one with a my space gets to hear more....
hmmmmm sigh didn't some one else in UK give a free cd away at their gig and then some one put it on my space and then they were household names....overnight..... tease doh! oh yeah .... Artic Monkeys!!

So you see people.. our man is doing what todays music business requires to stay afloat.... so, he was already set to do what the Artic monkeys did.... only he went one step cleverer ...and got a newspaper deal!!!
f*king marvelous....money in the bag...(b4 the freebies from the gig) .and direct promotion for the world... cos newspaper is online too and then the fact he's doing it makes news... ....and then people talk about it and argue like we have been doing....and then its a household debate in the realm of music discussion and technology....and then .. wow!....yes its called promotion!! razz

Thats the way to go! and as an artist my self.... i know how it feels, that we should be able to do what the hell we want with our art.

As for the person who spoke of record companies being required to get the smaller band noticed....disbelief er... for how long do u think that statement will stand to truth.... we r in the dawning of change....wake up!!

so congrats prince... hope it all works for you... actually I think it is already!

you r getting more radio airplay lately...i keep hearing Beautiful girl alot... cos it was ur major no 1 in Uk...i guess!
The young and un-itiated and exploratory music loving people r asking about you and I hear your name on the street and more and more people r smiling at my 3121 t-shirt..... so something is working for ya biggrin biggrin biggrin biggrin
and i'm damm glad for you.
we should all be happy for him. Ok bad political newspaper choice but its the best seller after News of the World... and that one is the pits!!!

so yes its great for us at org and hq or whatever fan base but its mainly fabulous for the artist and the reaching out to those who may not have bothered to get any prince album ever b4 now and its a finger to the archaic way the music industry is run by capitalist art-ignorant/money blinking execs!

ok i'm gona slide off the soapbox now.... xxxx

see u at the o2

You completely missed my point... I'm happy for the UK fans too; hell, I got to see GMA for free last summer (only 3 songs but still free) and I know he doesn't tour there as much so I'm thrilled for them. But why are the US "Club 3121" shows so much more expensive? Why doesn't he do this in the US, too? The record companies he's been fighting against for years are here too, so why not "free the music" everywhere?

(And not all the US fans got first row seats "really cheap" for Musicology.)

It's expensive for you, but the market price is reality. $312 for a show for only 200 people in a hotel like the roosevelt, and for 1000 or so at Vegas for $125, that is the going rate and i think it is unrealistic to expect anything cheaper. now the $700 deal for VIP in Vegas was reasonable based on my experience, but the $3121 for dinner, that to me is waaay too much but i guess it was slated for people who got it like that, although based on the reports of empty tables, not even they are willing to fork over that kind of cash. lol

Don't get me wrong. i was not happy when i heard about 3121 LA. not happy at all. i much prefer a state to state tour setup in a smaller venue over the resident tour/venue thing, but i guess he has his reasons, whatever the heck that is. shrug

now as far as him fighting the record companies, is that the real issue with you or are you just mad cuz you can't get a free copy too. wink (i'm being funny so please don't take it too seriously. biggrin )

oh and lastly, i know not every single fan got a cheap ticket, however you cannot deny the unforgettable experience of the Musicology tour, much of which had to do with the benefit NPGMC offered fans by giving them great seats for a cheaper price, which is why dealing with tickets now to see a Prince concert is very hard for those who have been spoiled.

I agree with U. When Musicology came 2 Houston, I went 2 both shows. The 1st show, I went with my godsister. Those tickets were bought directly from NPGMC 4 $75 a pop. When we got 2 the concert, we had floor seats (we could actually C Prince's sweat). Normally, 4 seats like those at any concert, 1 would have 2 pay somewhere around $150 and up per ticket. And, let's not 4get, we did receive free copies of the "Musicology" album. The 2nd show, I took my godbrother. I bought the tickets from Ticketmaster 4 approximately $49 a ticket. We were almost in the nosebleed section. But, we still got the "Musicology" CD with those tickets as well. I say, let the UK have it's fun while xperiencing what we xperienced with the Musicology Tour. Also, if the Mail On Sundays is a popular tabloid paper, I'd say this is a very smart move on Prince's behalf. Tabloids, more than likely, sell more copies than CD's. Also, this is another way that Prince has found 2 creatively distribute his music 2 a mass audience. Way 2 go, Prince! I'm with U on this move. Very smart business move in my book.
