Damn. That right there pretty much says it all.

I'm with you guys, Ian you are absolutely spot on. I want to shop in a record shop, and I can't because they have so little selection beyond 'best sellers'. And you have to fight through all the cafes, internet, games, and ipod crap to get there.

Boo hoo HMV, since when have you promoted any artist beyond your own profit margin? Only now do they charge under £10 for chart CDs, back catalogue can be as much as £15, why???

This is such a good point. Record companies are in business to make a profit and there is nothing wrong with that. However, because of that profit goal, they have NEVER been in the business of supporting artists. Some smaller indie shops might do this in limited ways, but big chains do not. So it is disingenuous for them to portray themselves in any other light.

I can't count the number of times that I have gone to a record store looking for a non-mainstream act and left empty handed because they did not stock them. Afterward, I would just go home and order it online, then wait 3 to 5 days for it to arrive. So it stands to reason that the Internet, where you can find anything, has ushered the demise of the record store. Therfore, I say bravo Prince! You keep doing your thing brotha!

Actually I think Masterfreak is refering to the Utrecht aftershow at Club Tivoli (R U Gonna Go My Way) from Dec 23, 1998 which includes a song by that name. geek It's a kinda funky jam with him & the NPG doing various chants over the music, but thanks to September 11, I seriously doubt Prince will ever play it again (especially not singing the lyrics!).

He'll probably get about £300,000 for doing this deal, which is equivocal to what he'd get from about 100,000 sales. Since when has he sold 100,000 of an album in the UK? So it works out as a shrewd business and PR move. End of story.

Just read that he's been paid £500,000. He wouldn't have got anywhere near this from sales of the album. Wise man.

Hello freaky.

The Mail is indeed a base-minded, sensationalist tabloid.
It has very little respect for the truth.
Most of it's readers are dumbf*cks.

Prince should have picked a different newspaper. confused

Well if that's the case maybe the free Prince cd give away is a lie.

back catalogue sales may increase due 2 this freebie- and getting out into the market place can only help future sales- not every one likes downloading music- they still like going into their local wrecka stow and getting that cd with cover notes/pics/lyrics in their hand.
i hope this deal with the papers, while good 4 those in the UK doesnt affect PE's release in Australia

its the same in book retail- publishers put an old book out 4 a reduced price with a sample chapter of that authors new book-some customers do come back 4 the new novel, and even pick up some back catalogue as well. win/win 4 author/publisher and retailer.

The suits are cranky about this because they didn't think of it first and they can't like their pockets with it.

Prince made a wise move with this stunt. (even though some do question his choice of newspaper...) He's set to make more money off this deal than he ever would have through traditonal distribution, he gets to deny CEO's profits -which no doubt pleases him to no end, and he gets his name out and about. People who may not have picked up a Prince album before might be intrigued after a move like this. Like realm said way up at the top of the thread, creating and keeping a steady fan base is lucrative.

with all do respect prince doesnt sell that many new records any more .it more benificial to give it away to create hype or maybe get a new fan that well spend 100 dollars on a concert ticket 40 dollars on a tshirt and on over priced crap that hes selling because he gets all that money.its just a marketing move and with the cds costing so little now probaly hes paying around 1 dollar or less its a smart move especial if the paper is picking up the tab on this one .

clasic artist dont get radio support anymore so they have to think of new ways to get people in to seats of arenas and thats where he makes his money.

look 3 million dollars made in los angeles ,1 million in the hamptons ny ,and million for the 21 nites in london .he needs to get new fans thats the only way to do it.

Wait a minute? I hope I haven´t missed something, cause I get hardly online these days, but how is the CD going to be released elsewhere? Is everybody on the org from UK, or what?

I think the last P album I stood outside of a record store before it opened, desperately waiting for them to open so I could buy it, was Emancipation. [I was the only one in line btw wink]

Now I have to do the same outside the newsagents?! wtf!

I don't know how/if this works in the USA... In the UK, you can buy American (and other country's) newspapers in newsagents a couple of days after publication... Therefore, there may be a possibility for the rest of the world to get copies of the MoS later on that week... Ask your newsagent... It could be worth a try. Otherwise, anyone who wants one can send me 1.50 + Airmail (which I'll have to work out), I'll have a word with my newsagent and reserve some, and then set about mailing Planet Eart around planet Earth!!
