I think it was a necessary phase. Sometimes the past can become a millstone around your neck overshadowing everything you do and preventing you from moving forward. Prince shed 'Prince' in order to grow. Once enough time had passed he could then view it objectively and embrace his past and his name again without any fear of it or resentment. | |

I think we assign more meaning to it than he does/did. I know he prattled on and on about his spirit telling him to do it. But it was just 2 things, really. A publicity stunt and a ploy to evade his record contract. When it backfired in both respects, I think he just had to keep it to save face and pretend he was serious about it.
