He doesn't really play drums!

In 80's he used Lindrum drum machines to "PROGRAM" and "SEQUENCE" his drums. He never plays the real drums.

In the 90's he used the MPC and Roland drum machines as well as software that was becoming available.

On "3121" he used Pro Tools with VST's to sequence his drums.

He can probably jam out on the real drums, but he's no drummer and he doesn't drum on his own records. If you hear live drums, and notdrum machines on his records, then it is played by others.

If he's credited for doing THE WHOLE TRACK, including the drums, then the drums were probably layed out using a drum machine.

That's just plain wrong. Only last night I was reading an interview in Modern Drummer from 2004, where John Blackwell was saying how much he was influenced by Prince's drumming. The tracks where he most liked Prince's drumming were 'Musicology', 'A Million Days', 'Bambi', 'I'm Yours' and 'Controversy'.

Morris Day was out of the picture long before this song was recorded.

....according to posessed... for the Parade LP he played out the drums first for christopher tracy's parade, new position, and i wonder you before adding any other instruments...

Prince can play drums. End of discussion. The level to which he can play drums is something that can be up for discussion.

Personally, I saw him play Tamborine, on request, at a soundcheck in 2002. Looked like he could play drums to me.

eek I can tell you have absolutely no idea on how tough it is to play drums on Tambourine.

I think it's utterly hilarious that people are actually doubting P's drumming skills. Makes no sense.

And what if he doesn't know what a flam or double flam or flam tap is, he can still play the drums. That's what makes great musicians - playing by ear or without any formal training.

Um... not when the music hasn't been written yet and they're making it up on the fly as they play.
