Hits DD: Prince signs w/Columbia 4 "Planet Earth" release?

http://hitsdailydouble.co...ormill.cgi

PRINCE MEETS RUBIN: Prince’s new album, Planet Earth, will be released by Columbia Records, as was his 2004 CD, Musciology. Last year’s 3121 came out on Universal Republic. The first single, “Guitar,” will be made available exclusively for free through Verizon to any subscriber who participates in an online demo of its new Song ID music identification service. The artist formerly known as The Artist is currently in L.A.’s SIR studios rehearsing for his upcoming tour, and will open a seven-week residency at L.A.’s Teddy’s in the Roosevelt Hotel starting later this month. The shows will feature a two-hour performance by Prince followed by an after-hour dinner during which he will continue to entertain, as part of a jazz ensemble. (6/1p)

Makes sense since he now has Michelle Anthony as his major advisor/team leader/ She was the former Exec VP at Columbia and was primarily responsible for bringing signing him for the Musicology album.

i'd love to see the same promo that Musicology got, but once all the musicology concert tix were sold didn't P soon do the diva act and kill the CD?.

I think that this is good news. Things went very well in the U.S. during the Musicology period – good promotion, radio airplay, interviews, etc.

I love the in's and out's of the biz... I read where the VP of Verizon said, "There is no music label involved here," says Verizon senior VP of marketing and digital media John Harrobin. "That enabled us to work very closely together." The only way fans can get the single is to try the Song ID demo, which will be available on Verizon's website, as well as online video outlets like YouTube, Revver and MySpace.

If all is true, it's interesting how Columbia, Prince and Verizon all came to an agreement on the single and i'm wondering if Verizon will offer the complete CD as a download as well.

Well im guessing he is going to commit to something in the states, possibly a fall tour with a giveaway/ticket thing again. I do believe that the whole thing he did with Musicology and the giveaway and counting as sales has been changed and that rule would not apply anymore, so giveaways do not count.

Somebody correct me if I’m wrong, but if I recall some of the articles from 2004 on the subject said that the rules have been changed somewhat. Now, such sales are only considered if the ticket buyer actually agrees to the additional purchase of the CD with the concert ticket. An artist can no longer simply include it with the ticket price. I believe that The Cure blew this up when they were going to sell their album for $2.00 with a concert ticket. Billboard had enough, changed the rule, but decided to grandfather Musicology sales for the charts. Still, given the size of Prince’s audience, even a percentage of concertgoers that go for this could still make for sizable sales.

As far as i know its not allowed anymore at all, Prince was allowed because the rule wasnt on the books, but now it is, the deal is now, there has to be an actual charge, and it has to be a price thats considered a legal cd, basically i think it would have to be stated in the sale, not just added on. The thing with Musicology was that they just handed it to you when you walked in, i wound up with 21 on that tour. So now as i understand when you buy a ticket, they have to ask you "would you like to purchase so and so's new cd at the price of $$". now i can see this working for Prince Fans but not if the album is out already.

Kill it? More like once the concert sales were over the album dropped to it's real chart position and no longer looked like such a 'hot ticket' itself.

Usually hitsdaily is very (!) well informed. So i think it`s
quite sure Prince has signed an agreement with Columbia.
I think Guitar is only the pre.single like te amo corazon and before the release of the new album we will see new single coming out...

Good news i think biggrin

Jazz? Where?

And he has never done anything quite like "Old friends 4 sale" again. And when you take it literally that Prince said in whatever interview that he will do all kinds of music just for the sake of variety, that's your problem.

Geez, I'm being pissy today. neutral

He has a major advisor/team leader? I have never heard of Michelle Anthony or anythign about the two working together...I thought P did things his own way and doesn't need an advisor or MANager.

Same dumb ass lyrics. confused The video is pretty silly too. But then, the first single released from his last several albums has always been the worst song on the disc.
