You know, I look back at Adam Ant and wonder if P was taking notes

Seriously.

I just got this Adam Ant DVD filled with old school artifacts that would make an Antfan nearly orgasm. But as I watch the clips of Adam onstage I can't help but think that Prince was taking notes. Especially with the wardrobe aspect of things. Forget about the music. No one before or since sounds like the Dandy Highwayman. But in terms of fashion, I could definitely see paralells in both Prince and Adam. But Mr. Goddard was wearing the ruffled shirts and leather and stuff years before Prince. So I'm sure our little purple hero got on the bandwagon a few years later. Or at least he took elements from that style to incorporate into his own fashion.

Yes, you nailed it.
He got his pirate shirt from Adam,
Adam got his from Jonny Rotten,
Rotten got his from the Alice Cooper,
Alice got his from the New York Dolls
(or was it the other way around?)
Alice & NYDs got theirs from Robert Plant,
(he owned a few, always got to have a clean one, yah know)
Plant got his from Jim Morrison,
Jim got his from Jimmy,
Hendrix got his from Mick,
Mick got his from Jerry Lee Louis,
Jerry Lee got his from Elvis,
Elvis got his from Little Richard
and Little Richard? .....
well he's the "Architect of R&R" (Rock & Renaissance)
(but we know he got his from Chuck Berry wink , Chuck was a closet pirate Lol)
As far as the others you don't see Keith Richards, James Brown, George Clinton, Bo Diddly, Muddy Waters...oh their pirates too. It's just that their so bad they don't need a shirt. Lol
Why isn't Rick James on the list you ask?
If he was asked I'm sure he'd say,
"I'm Rick James all you Pirate Bitches!"
Next time I'll talk about music influence. It'll be similar just without Adam Ant.....wait just one minute!
Wow I'm listening to "ATWIAD", any notice the similarities between that & "Strip"? " We can strip dadada.....around the world in a day!!!mmmmm....."

So basically some pirate is responsible for all rock & roll?

They're similar, and I think Adam watched Prince too, as he went farther into the sexy music with Strip & Manners & Physique (produced by Andre Cymone)

Nice! Quite accurate. Well done, mate! Yeah, not only P's clothes, which as u already mentioned, Adam took from Jimi, but P lifted Adam's videos as well. Look at Adam's "Goody Two Shoes" video and then look at "1999" and "Automatic". Two 2 women in Adam's video are definate blueprints for P's women's image.

Hendrix, The Beatles, and damn near every one else in the 60's were dressing like Adam Ant before Adam Ant was around. Prince most likely copped his style from that era.

I recently watched goody two shoes on youtube. His dancing was pretty bloody good man.

Adam Ant is the first man I ever fancied. I've continued to go for beautiful feminine men ever since.

Snap

as NDRU pointed out, Andre Cymone had more to do with Adam Ant (and vice versa) than Prince -- and neither one of them were the first to come up with that style, as also mentioned

Prince MUST have been watching an amount of Adam Ant... what else could explain the single white strip across his face in the Elephants and Flowers performance in GB? A definite throwback to the Kings of the Wild Frontier era.

Don't remember Jonny Rotten wearing a ruffled shirt... but your point is a good one. Adam Ant was a disciple of punk... most of his first band were nicked by Malcolm McLaren and went on to form Bow Wow Wow. Marco Pirroni - his guitarist - was in the first Siouxsie and the Banshees line-up (along with Sid Vicious). Adam pilfered his look from any number of other musicians, just like Prince.

that is so funny. There were two bands in the mid 80s that I collected EVERYTHING that was released... Adam Ant and Prince. Both were exceptional live performers, both had a great look and sound and both released a lot of additional material on b-sides and soundtracks and other sources.

Nice to see that someone else noticed it... I guess the difference is that Prince hasn't gone crazy like Adam did.
The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. (www.amazon.com/gp/product/1538114623/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0) or www.facebook.com/groups/1...104195943/

Adam Ant was and still is cool... if slightly off kilter... and who's to say Prince isn't either, especially after the NAACP speech. JOKE!

I still find the Andre Cymone link between the two bizarre.

Prince hasn't gone crazy??? He went crazy around "dirty mind" and hasn't been sane since!

Though to my knowledge he's never threatened someone in a pub with a starter motor.

From WIKIPEDIA:

In 1990, whilst maintaining an interest in acting, Ant returned to London and re-entered the pop music world with the album Manners and Physique, a collaboration with André Cymone, a solo artist and an early member of Prince's band. The album was another moderate success, and featured the hit single "Room at the Top" as well as "Rough Stuff" and "Can't Set Rules About Love". In 1993, he toured in support of a planned album called Persuasion. For reasons unknown, however, the album remains unreleased.

It's a valid comparison:

- The top image looks very similar to Prince during SOTT.
- The middle image looks like Prince's "Elephants & Flowers" look in Graffiti Bridge.
- The bottom image could be taken straight from the Purple Rain era.

So many other people contributed to Prince's look too though (Little Richard, Jimi Hendrix, Sly Stone). But he seems to somehow make it all his own (except for the Morning Papers "grunge" look shake)

Adam did some lovely albums... the last being, I think Wonderful, in about 1997/8... then his mental faculties left him and he went slightly mad. There was a tremendous documentary about him, just after his infamous arrest in North London, that paints the picture of an obsessed and manically depressed genius desperate to get his music and 'vision' heard and seen before collapsing in on himself. I'd say, with the body of work he released, he just about managed to do that. It is a real shame to have seen him self-implode like that. He was a magnificent performer... just look him up on youtube and relish in the creativity and vivacity of his video collection (don't let the 80s production put you off!). There is a genuine comparison between Adam Ant and Prince in their driven manner and their certainty. Two marvellous men. Two marvellous cavalcades of work.
