Just bought 3 bootleg DVD's thanks to P & Universal Music. Cause and effect!

And therein lies the point about why Prince will always create demand for bootlegs. I have no time to hunt down the free online performances , burn to DVD etc so it was always great to have HQ's vids available at the touch of a button. With that gone my quick and simple solution is to buy the boot. Well done Prince!.
p.s. nearly 2 weeks in and still 3121.com hasn't got the SB performance, now how shit is that!.

Well, if you've been satisfied with watching streaming, low quality clips on the web, then you've been missing a lot! I love that HQ provided them, but that certainly wouldn't be my only viewing choice.

If you haven't noticed, recently a lot of stuff (not just Prince) has been pulled from online sites like YouTube, etc., it's not only HQ being targeted. The HQ admin has repeatedly stated that this action is not coming directly from Prince, but from the publishing company.

As for the SB performance, we have no idea what the deal is there. The NFL generally owns the broadcast rights to the show, which probably includes the halftime performance. Haven't you seen the big disclaimer they run constantly that says something to the effect of "it's illegal to do anything with this broadcast"? So Prince might not be allowed to have it on his site either, we don't know.

Yes, but Prince remains owner of the music he performed on the videos of that performance. Well, not the covers, but he owns his performance of those covers - he in turn will have pay performance royalties to whatever collection agency collects royalties on behalf of the owners of those covers. And of course he has rights to his own image whether it appears in a photo or a video.

really it's not spite , just a desire to have access to my fave performances. If P ain't supplying it then boots are an alternative.I also just stumbled , for free on the net, a clip of 'joy in rep' from the NYC Aftershow as heard on the ONA aftershow compilation he did for the live CD set in 2002. It's incredible, i never knew it existed, i assume the whole show is out there.

Why didn't you just record it when it was on the TV?

Yeah!

I love Prince's music and performances, so I try to record what I can. I would LOVE to be able to buy a catalog of his videos/t.v performances and big concerts, but someone is keeping them from being available.

Overall, Prince seems stressful. I am glad I got my cool 3121 experience out of the way last week, b/c he's got too much going on. I need a break. Someone let me know when the tour starts. shrug

i did!, point is that you'd think a seminal moment like that in his career would actually be on his site as oppossed to the advert for the upcomming performance.

I thought the same thing. This could back fire and cause a boot resurgence.

Maybe since rec cos. are losing money they can start using underground sources to
recoup some monies. Sabotage should become a subsidary of Universal.

it amazes me how many people think it is ok to go their own route to get music the creator has decided not to release publicly for sale. but with some prince fans it's ok because by golly everything he does we are entitled to so if he doesn't put this on cd or this on dvd too bad, we think he should so f him. me personally, i can't believe they haven't released a dvd collection of the cartoon "shirt tales" from the 80s. i mean it was on tv!! i want it! i want to watch it! i don't care if they don't want to release it. And to show my disrespect i'm gonna buy it BOOTLEG!! yeah! that'll teach them to make their own creative ownership decision!

mindboggling are some prince fans.

I don't think people think it is okay, it is simply a case of when you run out of official releases to collect then you're forced down the unofficial route if you want to hear more. The material is out there, you can pretend otherwise, but you're just missing out. If your guilt over doing something illegal gets the better of you then you're not the type to collect bootlegs I guess, but most people can live with the guilt to get their hands on some amazing material by an artist they support in every other way and would buy legitimately if it was available. And then you have releases the creator did release publicly for sale but are no longer available, such as the download albums from the npgmc, why should someone coming late to the party be denied those? Prince clearly wanted them heard, and he must have got his moneys-worth out of them, where do you stand on those? The Gold Experience is no longer in print, does that mean Prince doesn't want us to listen to that album given the chance either? Being a fan doesn't mean I have to do everything Prince tells me.

i hear what you are saying about leaked studio trax, bootleg tour DVDs etc However my point is more geared towards TV performance clips, classic videos, various MTV type profiles etc that are up for general broadcast. If P / Universal are so against us having quick and easy access through HQs brilliant service then where's the harm in sourcing it from another supplier. Are you seriously saying that i was wrong to buy a DVD that had all the TV performace clips put together from the musicology era in one neat bundle with great packaging?.

on the subject of bootleggers i really suspect that the amount they sell of unreleased studio trax and DVDs is very small. Doesn't make it morally right[i've got masses of them]but thought i'd make the point.

I dunno what makes folks think it's so easy to find bootlegs in the first place?

The argument against them makes it sound like anyone with an internet connection can just order them up at will. So I searched and, outside of a few unofficial copies of SOTT on DVD, found absolutely nothing. Zero. Zip. Nadda.

So to say that bootleggers are getting rich off of this stuff....well, I'm skeptical at best. Even if someone has money in hand, there's no easy connection to it, so why all the fuss?
I've gone to find myself. If I should return before I get back, keep me here.
