I’ve heard several people comment on the symbol Prince chose to be his name. You know the one 0)+>.....

Some think it is a merger of the symbols for male and female mixed together.

I’ve heard some people say that is the word ‘VICTOR’ scrambled all together to form a sigil.

One person sees a trumpet, another a drum.

I see all of these.

But I also see the image of a man, one of his arms outstretched, his palm opened wide, like he’s getting ready to hold back the world, and if you look at it carefully, his other arm is curling into a fist.

What do you see?

Although in reality it is a mix of the male and female symbols, the Egyptian heiroglyphic ankh meaning 'life' and the soapstone alchemy symbol.

Well, I've got it Tatooed on my arm so whenever I look at it I see my Love for Prince and the day I made a vow to myself and God that I'd love him till the day I die. Even after "The Symbol" will still be with me.

I see the major essence of Prince
Music - the horn
Man - the male symbol
Religion - the cross

Its seemingly mixed male/female signs represents the unique/tricky way he does things so that it can be interpreted multiple ways - depending on how your mind works - i.e. you see what you want to see.

An example: Was I the only one who initially thought that Cream was a dirty ditty instead of the positive song it is?

I thought it meant he was a top or bottom, who blows. Universal Love Sign!

Prince 'stole' the 'symbol' from the 'soapstone' symbol, which dates back to egyptian mythology and is used inthe hermetic / alchemistic tradition. He did adjust it a bit by adding a circle to the indeed combine male and female symbol.

I couldnt find a really informative link about this, but here is something:

At one time the sign Prince uses stands for androgyny, on the other hand it refers to his interest in egyption and hermetic religion around that time (witness the theme to the Symbol-album, and the 'Gold' experience wich talks about 'going for gold' as a methaphore for spiritual enlightement, a methaphore often used in alchemy).

Oops... i did forget the 'horn' part of the symbol which stands for the music, but can also be seen as a symbol for 'heralding' the message.

So the whole symbol combines:
- the symbol for planet mars (male)
- the symbol for planet venus (female)
- the circle (symbol for the circle of life)
- the egyptian hyroglyph for soapstone (purity, transcendence)
- the christian cross (jesus)
- the trumpet (music, heralding the message)
