SUPERBOWL..Can he outdo MJ?

Michael Jackson's 90's superbowl performance pulled the largest TV audience ever. Do you think Prince, what with all the high profile stuff he's been doing lately, has the potential to top that?

Nah, definitely not. It'll pull in a good rating, but nothing like MJ levels.

It is an interesting question....

I would say no only b/c MJ back in 92(?) (Cowboys v. Bills) was pretty much a musical deity (before the fall).

Dangerous and the hype of Black & WHite (crotch grabbing stuff) helped propel his noteriety (for the better), so his performance was top-notch.

P doesn't have that kind of reach (MJ's one time popularity)for whatever reasons, but his will be the most musically engaging show of all the SB half time shows.

The discussion is about the possiblity of Prince's performance scoring higher ratings than MJ's did.

P, despite a recent renaissance, in mainstream America's eyes, is something of an unknown commodity despite being one of the most omnipresent musicians of the last 25 or so years.

Performance wise, P will get the people talking if he covers songs that the mainstream knows (Kiss, LGC, Purple Rain). If he goes into stuff from his 90's works(that didn't resonate with the masses), he will lose his audience.

Give the masses what they want, especially with an audience over a quarter billion people.

I want to say "no" cause the MJ performance was sooooo hyped, but wierder things have happenned. shrug

I mean, Prince did sign the biggest record contract in history when MJ was the supposed King of Pop. shrug

But I think dwelling on the ratings or who is going to tune in defeats the historical significance of this show. I mean, our "Prince" is going to be performing that gig, so no matter what, I'm definate excited about the show.

But I think comparing him to MJ will be kind of like watching a nasty ass pair of underwear ruin an otherwise great still life picture. shrug

As far as the performance Yes def. Prince can school Michael Jackson, and Michael knows it.

As far as ratings, No way. Michael Jackson is agurably the most popular entertainer, wether it be musician or actors the man was and still is to some extent incrediably popular. They didnt call him the King of Pop cause nobody like him, Pop is only short for Popular.

Exactly, which is why I'm curious about the setlist. Of course he'll perfrom these same tired azz songs, but I'm curious as to how he'll still manage to WOW the audience and gain some new fans.
I'm not, repeat not looking forward to all the damned 3121 football jerseys, and such. Lacey thigh pads and purple chin straps... lol

There is NO competition between the 2. Also, the television viewing habits of America have changed dramatically since 1990. It would be comparing apples 2 oranges.

First of all I think that alot of people are forgetting the most important part of this disscusion. The main determaining factor in the ratings is what teams are playing in the game. Dallas vs. Buffalo. Everyone know that Dallas Cowboys are the most liked NFL team. That helps right out of the gate. Then add to that the fact that Michael was at his height as far as popularity is concerned.
Prince may not get ratings quite as high but I think that they will be very close. My guess is that his halftime show will get higher ratings. Prince is going to blow the city of Miami and the world away. I can't wait.
