Something new, the sign of a true artist.

Now open for discussion is Prince’s ability or lack thereof to make something new and not a fallback item. In resented advertisement for the football game, prince appears in office as executives hurled “ideas” at him, but the ideas given are nothing more then regurgitations of his older works. Prince throws them a look to show his annoyance of such ideas, but if you look closer you will see prince is still throwing the same old annoyed look. Nothing new there at all, thusly Prince annoyed by the same old thing is trapped in doing the same old thing. Perplexing as that maybe, I find myself questioning Prince’s ability to do anything truly new. I find myself wondering if Prince doesn’t truly like being stereotypical in nature. Even his 3121 wasn’t new but a backward reaching attempt to regain his fading glory.

What might you say in support of his inability to produce a new thought, or in support of his ability? I am truly curious.
News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so.

And when he does, everybody will complain he's not their Princie anymore !
I dig whatever he does, just because there is no one else able to do it as good as he does.

So you think he should have done something new in the commercial to show his displeasure, is that it? Like what? Pull a booger out of his nose and wipe it on the table? confused

Sorry Mick, I think you're stretching on this one.

It's a funny commercial. We've seen the look before, but who changes their "annoyed" look?

lol @ Genesia...maybe instead he could have wiped his ass w/ the contract like Brendon Fraiser did in "Airheads"

Oh wait...that's been done before.

I wouldn't say 3121 is a backwards step per se, I just see it as a more successful attempt at what he tried to accomplish with Musicology. shrug

Genericly true though your statement might be, originality is mostly dead, still the point can be made using the word different.

I don't think he needs something new because what he's using are trademark things that identify him as prince. You say he has to do something new? So are you insisting that he completely goes to a new genre of music like death metal? Or stop using the hohner and use like some type of flying V guitar? Of course not because then that wouldn't be Prince; you get me? It's sort of like Michael Jackson and his moonwalk; he's never gonna stop moonwalking. It's hard for me to put it, but i dont think you should judge prince on doing the same old things when in fact some of those same old things make him prince.
chill..prince doesnt like men being front row, makes it hard to sing the ballads

He cant do something "new" right now as he is trying to gain that mass acceptance.

Its called stretching out his career, while the hardcores wait for the next TRC type thing.

He's not going to gain mass acceptance. He's too much of a shit heal hype master, and that shit is old school on a reserator.

He's so out of touch with reality, it's a crying shame.

I think that Prince is a true artist. He has a lot to say and he goes ahead and says it. If Prince never released anything else in his life. He has always pushed the envelope in what he said and wore and everything. I respect P for that. (It's kind of bad to only consider him a true artist by just how many albums he releases.)

Well, there are two things I have to say.

Number one is that when I'm irritated, I always glare the same way. My head might be tilted at a different angle, but the look on my face is pretty much the same. I'm sure it's altered a little over time but not really much. So when I'm irritated, I look irritated. I think I would confuse people if I didn't look irritated when I was. Or if I suddenly changed my "irritated" face. falloff

Number two is that it's a commercial. I thought it was pretty funny and didn't really take it seriously. To me, that's pretty much like saying "That actor in that movie gets mad at the smallest things." Well, actually, his character gets mad at the smallest things. I don't think the commercial tells us anything about the actual Prince.

Just my take on the thing. smile

If this statement was True! Then Prince would have been selling multi-million copies of each album since Purple Rain! Everytime he goes back 2 sounding like himself he has a gr8 album! In my opinion 3121 is a half arse Prince Album coz he's trying 2 attract the RnB crowd with a more contempory sound, which just don't suit him. in fact it's beneath him! Going down the Jazz path suited him better coz it pushes any artist to new heights of musicianship. But Jazz isn't all that popular 4 the youngsters. As Bill Cosby says in the Simpsons, when Bleeding Gums Murphy makes a guest appearance on the Cosby Show QUOTE:"The youngins thes days are into the Rap Music! With there hippin and a hoppin. And a bippin and a boppin!" razz

When you're rolling up on 50, there's only so much "new" left in the tank. This is true of pretty much any artist.

I'm pretty geeked for this superbowl thing. I hope he uses it as an opportunity to demonstrate conclusively, to a global audience, what a badass he is on the guitar.

This is all a crock.

When Prince doesnt do anything "new" its not a reflecion of his "source", its a relection of what the fans are capable of
consuming. He doesnt think anyone wants
anything more than a 3121-style CD.

That's sort of a crock in itself. He does exactly what he wants to do...pretty much all of the time. I doubt seriously if fan expectation had anything at all to with 3121...

He didn't put out 3121 because it's what fans expected, he put it out because it was a safe album with the highest chance of selling. He was trying to keep the momentum of the Musicology "comeback".

He doesn't do EXACTLY what he wants to do. If he did, we'd most likely get more TRC-style stuff. That stuff doesn't sell very well, so no matter how risky or artistic Prince is he'll always fall back on the bottom line eventually. And that's money.

As for the "something new" debate - nobody does anything new this far into the game without sacrificing the very thing that defines them. Paul McCartney's stuff lately sounds absolutely amazing but definitely NOT NEW.
