I think the albums should have been released just as they were, and it was fantastic to buy and listen to the extended versions (and the surprise B-Sides) as they were released (separately) to experience yet another side to the songs.

. Exactly. Another thing to consider is that even though Prince released an album every year, the timed release of the singles/b-sides made the time between albums seem even SHORTER Back in the 80's and early 90's you really didn't have to wait long to hear some new Prince music. I agree with the above posts, the extended versions are an experience that is totally different to the version listed on an album/cd. Ususally it just isn't practica to include various extended versions because it would merely take up too much space. I enjoyed listening to a cd or album back in the day and later picking up an extended remix of a particular song. I remember when Lovesexy came out and the cd was basically one track. It was a pretty fluid record for me anyways. Later I picked up the maxi single for I wish U Heaven. I liked the maxi single for it's length and for it scarlet's pussy and the various other versions that were on it. So no I don't think they should have been on the albums as a general rule. I liked it then and I like it now.

It's on nothing... Any extended version is a fake..... This thread shows the difference between people who just download the files from p2p programs and people who actually buy the records is obvious.... Or at least those who consult a decent discography. [Edited 11/4/06 1:41am]

. i agree. however, it is very easy these days to make your own 'alternate' album in a winamp playlist. it's quite fun to add all the long versions to Around the World in a Day, instead of just the album versions. but indeed, it was so nice to run out and buy those singles with extended songs and brand new ones. sometimes i wish i had a pill to make people disappear

. I agree with that, but when some of his albums are only 40 minutes long I wish he would put some extra songs from his vault on there

[Edited 11/4/06 1:41am] i have the extended version; IT'S NOT FAKE!!!!! oh yes it is, do some research or at least ask a a long time collector their opinion before hitting your caps lock and shouting your view. Fake. so is any extended cut of '17 Days' before that gets mentioned too. A box-set of his extended cuts would be lovely, I have nearly everything on vinyl, T's bootleg archive on CD and another bootleg called 57inches too, so that pretty much covers it, but something official would be welcomed right here. Especially his 80's work. 'music combining elements of jazz, blues, and soul and characterized by syncopated rhythm and a heavy, repetitive bass line' = Funk!

I'm quite happy with the way the albums are, but the extended versions often due improve on some of the songs themselves. I could see the dance remix of "Little Red Corvette" fitting well on the 1999 album, but that 1-2-3 punch of the first three songs may not be as hefty if the extended was included. The extended versions of "17 Days", "Lady Cab Driver" & "Baby I'm A Star" are FAKES. how are they fake when i have them?

No. Exteneded versions are mostly to sell more records to make money on a song that's beeen previously released, purely a money making scheme for the record companies. I can't believe so many people fall for it remember the words to all that glitters ain't gold? everybody wants to sell what's already been sold! you making Warner Bro. RICHER and Prince ain't getting a dime.

The extended versions of "17 Days", "Lady Cab Driver" & "Baby I'm A Star" are FAKES. how are they fake when i have them? Because they were never officially released by Prince and they are not ottakes either. They were made up by fans... hence they are "fakes".

Prince would receive money for an extended version that is officially released. As the songwriter he would receive a royalty, and he would receive payment for any publishing recouped on the version. When extended versions were released during the '80s by Prince, they would generally feature on 12" singles. These would either be released the same day as the 7" single or a week later to boost single sales. People didn't 'fall for it' in so much as they would look either collect both versions because that was their interest, or they sought out the extended version because it often added something special to the song. . . I wish all the extended versions that are only available on vinyl would be released on cd. I'm slowly getting them on vinyl, but since I don't have a record player right now The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

I could aquire them on boots, but vinyl is so much cooler... for one there are places where all of them can be found on cd... as far as i care as long and you have them on vinyl there is nothing immoral with getting them on unofficial cd.... for 2: they make some nice cheep usb turn tables that come with the software to put them on to cd.

[Edited 11/4/06 4:23am] the other problem being that the extended version didn't exist until after the album was out. "The world of the heterosexual is a sick and boring life. " -- Edith Massey in Female Trouble

Alltough i lost track with his 12/inch releases in the nineties, i really enjoy the 12-inches he released from songs on Around the world in a day, Parade and Sign. To me they sound like he is really trying to create something special and exciting with this longer versions, apart from ´just´ delivering long remixes for the dancefloor. I mean, some of these extended versions are even better then original songs, and mostly thats not the case with remixes from other artists. Too sum up my personal favorites which i consider better then the shorter album versions - Raspberry Beret and Pop Life, maybe not better then the original songs, but some creative us of sounds, effects and rhythems to keep these longer versions exciting. - She is always in my hair, its a shame they put the edited version of this song on the Hits set, this song has one of the strongest coda´s he has ever done, Lennon and Hendrix lifted off by a drum machine going mad, sort of speak. - Hello, a funky song, and one of the strangest/silly coda´s Prince has ever done, weird, psychedelic but fun to listen to. - Mountains, maybe my favorite extended Prince-cut, the whole second part of the song is just mind-blowing, the building up of instruments and riffs reminding me a lot of those jams by Sly and the family stone, also very influential for his later work, i mean: listen to the building up and release of musical energy on the title track of Lovesexy. - Shockedelica: in the edited version it sounds like something is missing to this song, the extended version is just perfect, with the nasty guitar solo, lines as ´youre laying on my guitar, bitch´, just a nasty, raw, blackhumoured little gem. - 200 Balloons: a raw, nasty track benefitting from Boni Boyers background vocals and the chaotic ending, where Princes layered vocals are sounding like a choir of munchkins or aliens. - Thieves in the temple: this extended version goes just about everywhere, the original song sounds like an attempt to write a new ´when doves cry´, the long version has two percussional breaks, a soaring mondharmonica sample, a psychedelic sounding bridge, and a busy, energetic finale much like that on 200 balloons. The kind of genre-blending, exciting, original music i fell in love with when i became a Prince fan at first. I bought most of these extended versions on vinyl, but i, like many others, dont use my recordplayer anymore. So it would be very nice to see these gems assembled and released on CD oneday. I have nearly all those on my laptop except TITT, mountains and 200 balloons Prince really says'your lying on my guitar bitch'? I wouldn't expect that from prince; that's pretty degrading.
