COME: a Contractual Obligation

I am quite concerned about this...

if anyone remembers the vault on npgmc, you may have noticed that Prince along with a number of other albums, rubber stamped COME as a 'Contractual Obligation;! I found this shocking and unjust, as i believe COME to be one of Prince's best albums he was made. It is certainly extremely under-estimated and did not deserve the poor rviews it received at the time. I don't see how Prince can call it a contractual obligation and why he should play down the album so much. I understand 1993 was a bad year for Prince in terms of his record deal but is there anyone else that feels the same way about COME????

So was Chaos and The Vault I love 'em all

And I think Come is one of his best 90's albums

Don't fret about it just enjoy the music!

I think Prince likes to simply show how great he is, and even the "contractual obligation" records are great. Like "this old thing? It's just something I threw on!"

Also he wants to point out the current issue he's cocerned with--at that time it was Warner Bros.

Personally, I don't think that Chaos & Disorder or Come or the Vault got any less attention than The Gold Experience. Maybe he saved what he thought were better songs for Gold or Emancipation, but I think when he's working he's working, and he's giving his full attention.

So love Come without any reservations!

I think Prince did believe that TGE was better and he was steadfastedly not wanting to release it, so the WB would not bank any money from it. I think he then became aware that any of his music made at the time was WB property (hence why we have not seen any vault material given to WB over the span oif his carreer released). I think that is when he decided to get out as quick as he could and released TGE, C&D, TBA and the Vault (which contained weaker material than other vault tracks) in a quick succession.

"Come" as at track is phenomenal and the album is one of my fave PRINCE albums of the decade.

"Come" is one of my favourites, and the Rhythm Section on this Album is probably my favourite of the Prince alumni.

funny how some of those obligations turned out to be great albums...although they didn't feel like real releases to me either.....my fav. is LetitGo

I read that Come and The Gold Experience we're supposed to be the same project. Come being part 1: the Death of Prince etc... and The Gold Experience being prt 2: Welcome to the Dawn etc..

I think he planned to release them back to back, more or less at the same time, but WB didn't like the idea of 2 disks competing against each other in the same year.

They then went on to release Come followed a months later by officially issuing the Black Album?!?

"Come" is a brilliant album. The firt single I heard was "letitgo" which had a feel that could have sprung from the 1970's. Laid back, cool, and infinitely decisive at the same time. I don't remember it doing much on the charts, but I remember understanding what he was saying about his life. He was about to do something unprecedented in showbiz at the time, and wasn't sure where it was going to lead. But he was willing to do it anyway, despite his hesitation or fear. What a hero! What a maverick! What a brave and confident individual.

I loved the first song 'Come' ("if you had the chance to see the future so will I..."), 'Space' ("Ive never been one to hide my feelings, but baby you blow my mind.."), 'Pheromone' ( what a sexy song, taking us into sexual fetishes we've never been to with Prince before. "Her eyes are closed but there's no penetration, he just makes her pump a fist up to his nose while he masturbates..." and I would give my left tit to understand what the vox is sayig in the background music, 'Loose' (great techno, even though it's not his forte), 'Papa' (hooked me, so weird and unusual, but I can totally relate to it. Don't ask. My papa was the same way. And Prince's moans and groans as he's being smacked by Papa are at once intriguing...and terrifying.

Yada, yada, lots of other great songs to complete the album. 'Race'. 'Dark'. But the masterpiece of the 2nd half is no doubt 'Solo'. Prince does things with his voice I never thought were possilble. A friend of mine heard it one day, not knowing who it was, asked me who the woman was who sang that really sad song. I took extreme delight in telling him who it was. That song, so desperate, so lonely, almost so close to giving up forever..... haunts me and shall continue to haunt me as long as I shall live.

But I too, hated the art. The black and white pics, the implication of a funeral being conducted, the hair, the clothes. Couldn't stand that look. I understand what he was trying to say...(Prince is dead), but that didn't make it any easier to look at.

I LOVED this album!!! Contractual obligation or not, "Come" "Pheromone" "Space" and "Let It Go" are some of my favorite Prince tracks!!

My offer:You should hear 'God' (vocal version) and 'Another lonely christmas' 12" version after 'Solo' (on headphones by candlelight - nothing else) and you couldn't gett off your goosebumps.

Robertes..... your left tit sounds too high-maintenance - can I call the deal off?

So, after this thread I put the COME album on for the first time in ages.... (must confess Prince hasn't been on high rotation lately, I'm currently exploring old jazz + funk that's never been released on cd) - MAN, the sequence COME -- SPACE -- PHEROMONE -- LOOSE is a killer!!!!! I miss this sense of urgency from his current work, this perfect FLOW between tracks! On a tangent here, but I do think this has been his main problem throughout the last few years... it's not so much the actual songs, it's the sequencing that's been wrong - RAVE has a few gems, NPS has a few gems, same for CB, Musicology, 3121 - but the problem is most of his CDs from the last decade sound like a mess, they don't "gel", don't flow. TRC and NEWS are the exception to the rule IMHO!
