New Prince Song in "Happy Feet"?

http://www.aintitcool.com/node/30064

[...]Hi Harry - Long time reader, first time writer. There was a screening in Atlanta today of about 20 minutes from 'Happy Feet', and I was lucky enough to see it. A rep from Warner Brothers introduced the footage, which was shown in video form, saying that it was rough in spots, and with a temp track, but that otherwise what we would be seeing would be what will be in the finished film. He mentioned that Savion Glover had done all of the tap dance sequences by motion capture, and that he was currently in a studio filming more for the end credits, which included a new song by Prince ("Heart Song").[...]

Miller's Happy Feet on a grand scale
Tuesday Aug 1 16:40 AEST
George Miller's new film is shaping as one of Australia's biggest ever movie productions, using more technological power than the Pentagon.

Selected media and industry types were treated to a 15-minute sneak peek of Miller's new animated film, Happy Feet, about a bunch of singing and dancing Emperor penguins.

The multi-million dollar film is a co-production between Village Roadshow Productions and Warner Bros Pictures and has been several years in the making.

"We are using more computer power than the Pentagon uses," Miller said of the animation which will hit screens in Australia on Boxing Day.

"We decided a long time ago to make the film as photo-real as possible. We sent two expeditions down to Antarctica to research and take photographs to capture the landscape and light."

Happy Feet boasts a strong cast of Hollywood heavyweights, including Robin Williams, Elijah Wood, Brittany Murphy, and Australians Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman.

Other Australians voicing characters include Magda Szubanski and Hugo Weaving.

The film tells the story of a group of penguins who can all sing, except Mumble (Wood), who can't sing a note but can tap dance.

"At the heart, it is a story about belonging," said Miller, whose other film credits include Babe, Dead Calm and Mad Max.

"Happy Feet is a film unlike any other anyone has ever seen before."

Australian visual effects company Animal Logic has been working on the film at Sydney's Fox Studios.

Roadshow managing director Joel Pearlman said Happy Feet would be one of the biggest films to be released this Christmas.

"This is without a doubt one of the most important films we have ever released," said Pearlman.

Happy Feet, which also features the singing voices of Pink and KD Lang, will be released in the US in November.

Miller said pop star Prince also was penning a song for the film.

"Prince saw the film the other day and was very excited to write something for us," he said.

Penguins are so cute, I liked the last penguin movie that was out.

No member of the animal kingdom nurses past maturity
(Nurses past, oh yeah)
No member of the animal kingdom ever did a thing 2 me
(Ever did a damn thing)
So I don't eat no red meat or white fish
Or funky, funky blue cheese
We're all members of the animal kingdom
Leave your brothers and sisters in the sea

For some reason that song popped into my head just now as I was reading this story.

This thread is proof that some will find fault with anything Prince does. First, animation is not just for kids. Second, not only is this film a quality project but it will surely be a classic. This is a great gig for, not just Prince, but anyone...if they can get it.

I hope he takes it to the next level and is cast in an upcoming film/animation of theirs.

im gonna admit i havent really been jazzed about prince of late but i said it was a cool thing for him to be doing...

and while i am jonzing to see the film myself (before prince's involvement) calling it a potential classic seems a bit of a stretch...IMHO.

As far as animation goes, it's not that much of a stretch at all. It will be a classic. That's my guess based on this alone. We'll know soon enough.

This doesn't reek of Elton John because it's only one song. If it was the whole soundtrack, I'd agree with you, but everyone contributes a song or two to soundtracks at some point. At least it's a high-quality project, not like Showgirls.

This line makes me think of Family Name:

"This is without a doubt one of the most important films we have ever released," said Pearlman.

Thinking now that he was singing about someone specifically at WB hmmm

The Muppet Show was more for adults, imo...

It's not even so much that it's for a children's film, or even that it's an animated film (which I detest), it's the fact that between this, performing in Vegas, AI & the Superbowl, he's teetering awfully close to becoming some sort of mainstream parody of himself. (Popular does not equal good.) Elton John used to be funky and rock the crazy outfits, etc. now you only hear his songs on easy listening or classic rock stations. I just don't want Prince to end up marginalized like that--he has enough problems getting air play as it is...

For something to be a "household name" usually mean it's boring, lifeless, and bland -just the way the soccer moms of the world like it.

Nothing wrong with doing a song or two for an animated movie, but I think what jone70 said is closer to what's going on than anything else. Is Prince becoming a mainstream parody of himself? neutral

AI especially was a low point. I'm well aware that our hero is the Queen of Hypocrisy, but that show is the most vile by-product of everything he'd been bitching about all these years.

I like Elton too, I just don't like any music he's put out in a long time. Who says getting older has to equal bland? Elton's music used to be like a full course meal, now it's plain toast.

I wouldn't say Prince has arrived at that point yet, but sometimes he's edging more towards easy-digestive territory than he used to.

He mentioned that Savion Glover had done all of the tap dance sequences by motion capture, and that he was currently in a studio filming more for the end credits, which included a new song by Prince ("Heart Song").
It's Savion Glover who is responsible for the terrific tap dance in Joint2Joint?

Haven't heard the Happy Feet track but if it's good, it will probably get the air play that you seem to be concerned about, so you should be happy.

Actually I couldn't care less if Prince gets airplay. (I don't even listen to the radio anymore.) It just seems to me that he is sometimes concerned with it, as are a lot of other fans.

Imo, the 'general public' or 'mainstream' have no idea he's been putting out albums on a regular basis for the last however many years, etc. and so when he pops up on cheesy shows like AI or in Las Vegas (regardless of whether the concert was cheesy, Vegas has a certain image assoicated with it) it seems that he's desperate to become relevant/popular, but for him to become 'popular' by mainstream standards his music will probably have to suck (like most 'popular' music today.)

Admittedly, I'm not really into 'pop culture' I'm sort of a snob that way; so it drives me insane when people equate popularity with good/talent. Often it seems that the two are tangentially related, if that. Just because an animated movie with a bunch of so-so actors doing voice overs and singing (poorly from what I can hear) is going to be popular doesn't mean it's good. (I understand the animation technique is groundbreaking but again that doesn't necessitate a 'good' film.) I saw Babe and found it mildly amusing (perhaps b/c I grew up on a farm?), I hated Moulin Rouge, I can't stand Nicole Kidman, & I detest animated films...so I won't see this movie, and if I have to buy a CD full of crappy remakes or 'feel good' songs to get the rumored new Prince song I'll probably do it, but I'll be slightly annoyed... confused

Oh definitely. Like I sad, even if it isn't a smash hit, it'll still get recognized as a technical marvel. I'd really like to see more movies like this from this company, to me it looks like if ILM & Dreamworks had a child, this is the kind of movie it would make. It'll be all the OOH and AAH of the Final Fantasy movie without that annoying little thing called Uncanny Valley to screw it up. razz

Joel doesn't work for WB - he works for Village Roadshow, an Australian Film Distributor and producer which has a partnership contractual relationship with WB. Unfortunately Joel's never had any contact with P, tho he's a big fan (not as big as me, his younger bro...)

AHHH!!! That is so cute!!!!! I'm gonna be standing in line on opening day, let me tell you! I wish I had kids, so I could bring them to the movie. Does anyone want to lend me their kids for the day? Just kidding.

Oh, about the Prince song. I hope that it has a whimsical, Parade feel to it. Hopefully it won't all be sung in his falsetto, it might scare the kids! lol

I hear ya on taking a little kid to see this movie. It's ashame that my two little nephews don't live close to me anymore, or I would take them to see this movie, most def!

All sounds bizarre, I thought the clip looked abit poor in parts though (lotsa parts). Must be the cynic in me! I wonder if Prince liked it so much because Hugh Jackmans character sings Kiss! razz
It's not just one clip, it's a series of clips...
"Poor" can be a matter of taste, but I'm just curious...
What parts do you find poor? and, poor in what way?

Aesthetically and technologically, I would say it's pretty superior...perhaps it's the realism that bothers you, though. And, as far as the humor goes, I'm still laughing...but maybe you don't find it funny.

What are the "(lotsa parts)"?

I'm all late with this thread. This is great news. I hope the song is great. I haven't read the whole thread but if no one mentioned it before here's a thought: If the song is that good, Prince may get nominated for another Oscar. With a nomination, comes another performance on TV for all of us and maybe another award for the man. Just a thought.

Come on now.

People seem to be upset that he's doing stuff for kids. If you remember, back in 1996 (before the tragic death of his son), Prince had plans to put out a children's book, and an album of songs for kids. He went ahead with the Muppet Show appearance. Why is it so unbelievable that a man his age would do something for children? Many of his fans have children, and he seems to have a real heart for kids.

FROM USA TODAY....

•A Prince is charmed Hugh Jackman, as Mumble's Elvis-inflected dad Memphis, and Nicole Kidman, as his Marilyn-inspired mom Norma Jean, perform Prince's Kiss. But Miller wanted to change a lyric or two, and had to ask permission. "We got a denial. Prince said no." But then Warner Bros. decided to show His Purpleness the movie. "Not only did he allow us to change the lyrics," Miller says, but "he said, 'I want to write a song.' It inspired him."

I've seen Moulin Rouge--didn't like it at all and I can't stand Nicole Kidman, so I'ma have to respectfully disagree with you on that. To each their own...

But regardless of Nicky, whats the excuse for Robin Williams & Brittany Murphy?

I think I remember seeing him tap a few times on Sesame Street with another younger boy. Always enjoyed it as well!

Looking forward to the movie, it looks super hella cute...and I dig the new song from Prince.
