As I've said before, those figures ain't bad if you consider they are entirely from sales of the physical CDs without online download support such as I-Tunes which I should think are incorporated into the figures of all the other artists?

I'm sure I read somewhere that downloads now count towards 60% of the share, so if you assume if Prince had put up 3121 on I-Tunes or whatever - he'd be upto 1,169,910 by now!

U.S. Album Sales Down; Downloads Soar

LOS ANGELES -- U.S. album sales were down 4.2 percent in the first half of the year, but sales of music downloaded online soared 77 percent, according to industry figures.

Total sales of albums across different formats -- CDs, digital albums, cassette and others -- stood at 270.6 million between Jan. 2 and July 2, compared to 282.6 million in the same period last year, according to Nielsen SoundScan figures released Friday.

The top-selling album so far this year is a soundtrack inspired by the Disney Channel movie "High School Musical," which has sold more than 2.6 million units. eek

Albums by Rascal Flatts, James Blunt, Mary J. Blige and Carrie Underwood round out the top five.

The decline reflects in part a dearth of big hits compared to the same period in 2005, which saw Mariah Carey and rapper 50 Cent each release multi-platinum sellers.

"Considering that you haven't had a 50 Cent to be the Pied Piper during the first half of the year or a Norah Jones the year before that, being behind 4 percent in album sales is really not that bad," said Geoff Mayfield, director of charts for music tracker Billboard.

The R&B genre accounted for the biggest slice of all albums sold so far this year with 53,806, but also represented the biggest percentage drop -- 22.4 percent -- in units sold by genre from the same period last year.

The country music genre saw a 17.7 percent increase in sales over the first half of 2005, the highest percentage of all.

While the CD remains the dominant album format despite a sales decline in all but one of the last five years, music fans have been increasingly buying digital downloads of single tracks and full albums.

Nearly 281 million digital singles were purchased through July 2, compared to 158.8 million in the time frame last year. More than 14 million full-album downloads were purchased in the first six months of this year, more than double the 6.5 million bought in the first half of 2005.

The growth of online music purchases is a mixed blessing for recording companies, however. Such sales often come at the expense of more profitable album sales as music fans opt to cherry pick a few songs online instead of purchasing a whole album.

"Digital distribution is an answer to the consumer who's been throwing up that complaint," Mayfield said. "It's a changing dynamic that the industry still needs to get its arms around."

Despite rampant music piracy, overall sales of albums, singles, music videos and digital music totaled 564 million units, a 23 percent increase over the same six-month period last year.

Among the four major recording companies, Universal Music Group led the pack with a market share of 31.66 percent. Sony BMG Music Entertainment was second with 26.25 percent market share, followed by Warner Music Group's 19.30 percent and Britain's EMI Music's 10 percent.

Independent record labels accounted for 12.79 percent of market share.

I read a similar article which talked about the ability to download individual songs as also causing a decrease in cd sales. why by the album when you can get the one song you want

Man! I really don't understand why it is not available for download. Wasn't this download inaccessibility the same with Musicology? To me, not making 3121 available for download immediately after the American Idol performance was a mistake. Unfortunately, he or Universal may have waited too long to take serious advantage of it now. Oh well…

Is it possible that he doesn’t want people only downloading singles without downloading the whole album at this point? Anyway, right now, only something major can lift 3121 to platinum sales status, such as a tour or a big top 40 hit single. Regardless, going gold is still a good showing. He’s the man.

Do realize how stupid you sound? remember this shit here?

Do you remember that you're selling it for $10.99

Besides the fact that you are attempting to so badly to sound like one of his talentless hookers and mimic his sound, how can you have the audacity... i'm sorry the O-Dass-Sit-TEEE to babble on about original ideas, who stole what from whom, and music should be free.

Yeah,I noticed that too.His CD was pretty much dead on arrival, even though he had a high-profile single ("Control Myself" with J-Lo) that went Top 10.Perhaps he should just stick to acting? In the hip-hop world,he's considered ancient.

Just a bit of chart triva....

This weeks #1 debut by Johnny Cash at about 88,000 copies is the LOWEST sales amount for a #1 debut. Breaking the mark set by Destiny's Child's " #1's " of 113,000.

3121 by comparision sold 181,000 in its debut.

And a historical comparison ....In 1995, The Gold Experience sold over 91,000 in its first week...it debuted at # 6

I will never understand why Prince doesn't have his entire catalog and portions of his vault on iTunes by now. He could make a heck of a lot more money doing that than he ever made with the failed music club. There really is no reason for him no to master and release on iTunes an album of vault material each month.

The grateful dead have 97 full albums on iTunes. Prince has 18 (counting singles) and most of those are incomplete, so you can't buy the whole album even if you want to. There's only 7 complete prince albums on iTunes. You can get Purple Rain from about 20 different people, including a country version - ugh - but not the prince version.

I agree -- Prince could easily release more new material (heck, even CURRENT material) on iTunes, but I wonder how much control he has to get full albums on iTunes from the WB days. Probably doesn't matter since he doesn't seem too interested in selling material that's pre-1996.

And why wouldnt he put it on ITunes???

Well, I don't know, you'd have to ask him. Obviously I-Tunes takes a cut and maybe Prince doesn't like that cut coming out of his share, but he'd still make money over and above, I'm sure. Of course, if he had his own site up and running and was selling it on there and made it easy for non-fans to find and download without going through about 5 screens, then he wouldn't need I-Tunes at all...

I'm glad someones actually tried to answer the question of why his albums aren't on itunes rather than just complaining about it.

I think its about percentages, to prince its not so much about money per se but about the percentages he can make from it I reckon. He has put some stuff on itunes though, but I think its part of a deal etc eg BlackSweat/BLB doubleA download.

I think it might also be because he has no real interest in promoting his WB albums without control of his masters - maybe WB and P need to sign an agreement to get his WB stuff on itunes, and prince is holding out saying that he wants more control of his masters (remember londell saying he didn't want full control any longer, just a much better deal?). I think that seems quite likely.

Either way, prince isn't stupid, theres a reason he's holding back on itunes, he knows he can make a crapload of cash by shoving his stuff on itunes, the fact that he doesn't I kinda admire, even though I'd love to see more people download his NPGMC stuff (like TCI and Slaughterhouse) and know the figures etc, its interesting to think he might be holding it off there because he can get a higher percentage, even though by putting them on itunes he'd sell more and probably make more in real terms than he would just by having the higher percentage of the profit on the NPGMC.

The Beatles also arent available on Itunes, and this is also due to the fact that its in their contract that they all have to agree on the revenue %, this is why it was an issue to get the Beatles on CD at first. Anytime there is a change in formats an the way to sell something, if the artist has it in their contract, they have the right to block the sale of their merchandise until they agree.

no, the beatles aren't on iTunes because they are remastering their music and are waiting until it's all done to put it on itunes.

"We're remastering the whole Beatles catalog, just to make it sound brighter and better and getting proper booklets to go with each of the packages. I think it would be wrong to offer downloads of the old masters when I am making new masters. It would be better to wait and try to do them both simultaneously so that you then get the publicity of the new masters and the downloading, rather than just doing it ad hoc."

Prince isn't on itunes either because he's gotten bad advice from someone. If he puts all of the material he owns the rights to on iTunes, he get 67% of all sales and doesn't have to pay any staff other than someone to master the material. This has to be a better return than he got from the NPGMC. There was a time in his life when Prince would have been the first to embrace iTunes.

btw: when people upgrade their computers, how do the get the keys updated to all of the music they bought these last couple of years if NPGMC is gone?

Big Deal, Purple Rain sold a million in its first two weeks in 1984. Now theres been a decline. Thriller was a bit slower off the mark, it didnt really sell until Billie Jean was put on MTV about 2 months after it was released, I think Thriller sold more copies in 1984 than it did in 83.
