Prince songs you don't understand

As P likes to be mysterious and use metaphysics etc, is there any song you've never really understood? I'm quite sure we all here have at least one song we don't get. It's time to be honest ppl! Nothing to be ashamed of. smile

Snap

What's the story behind "Another Lonely Christmas" -- I refuse to believe it's all made-up. Sounds way too personal.

It's about getting 'stupid'. Tragic tale, really. Flowers for Alergnon was the inspiration.

Yeah. Some songs are supposed to be kind of nonsensical and you're not supposed to understand it intellectually.

But then, there songs like "3 Chains o' Gold" that seems to be saying something specific but I just don't get it.

ditto Purple Rain, I mean, is it a Spiritual or Sexual rain? always been a bit grey on that.

others:
Starfish and Coffee (yup, brave enough to stand up and say "Duh?")
Lemon Crush (sexual for sure, but is it some obscure act I've never heard about?)
She Gave her Angels (cant decide whether its a real girl, or a song to his "Anima/Soul" - see Jung)

For me Starfish & Coffee translated into:
Starfish = danish/bearclaw type
coffee, maple syrup, jam = self explanatory
butterscotch clouds = pancakes
tangerine, side order of ham = again self explanatory

so Cynthia had a pretty big lunch that day!

America...

It sounds like an ultra-patriotic, jingoistic hymn to the U.S.A. but it possibly isn't...

Aristocrats on a mountain climb
Making money, losing time
Communism is just a word
But if the government turn over
It'll be the only word that's heard

Is Captalism a good thing, because the people making money are really just "losing time" by pursuing material gain... Is he actually saying it would be a bad thing if Communism was the "only word that's heard"? Is he comparing the two extremes as two sides of the same coin and saying neither philosophy works?

Little sister making minimum wage
Living in a 1-room jungle-monkey cage
Can't get over, she's almost dead
She may not be in the black
But she's happy she ain't in the red

Again... Is the "little sister" right to be happy that she isn't "in the red", or is she deluded? Is it better to live in a Capitalist society and be so poor that you're "almost dead"?

Jimmy Nothing never went 2 school
They made him pledge allegiance
He said it wasn't cool
Nothing made Jimmy proud
Now Jimmy lives on a mushroom cloud

Does Jimmy live on a mushroom cloud because he wouldn't stand up for his country and fight? Or is Prince saying that it doesn't matter whether or not you pledge allegiance because somebody could drop a bomb on you anyway?

My guess is that the song isn't pro-America but anti-patriotism. Especially when the album's title track has the line: The former is red, white and blue... I'm guessing that he's saying notions of man-made boundaries (i.e. countries) are meaningless.

It's very intriguing.

Prince used to be pro-Reagan. The song is a warning against Communism--nothing more than that. Jimmy wasn't patriotic and didn't believe America was worth fighting for, etc.

Starfish & Coffee was apparently about a mentally handicapped girl that Susannah Melvoin knew when she was younger, I think. It's in the book DanceMusicSexRomance, but I haven't read it in a while, so I'm not sure if that's right or not.
