My Prince circle is complete now I like many other people turned away from Prince with the release of ATWIAD. We were blind, or better yet, we were deaf.
I just bought AWTIAD, because I wanted to have a complete collection of Prince. I didn't want to buy AWTIAD. I actually have on vinyl but no turntable, and NO desire to listen to it. But just wanted the complete collection. I got it on CD, and just listened to it to make sure the CD played properly. WOW!! I guess I matured and can finally appreciate a great piece of work it really is. I guess at the time, I was so bitterly disappointed that ATWIAD was so different from PR and my broke azz bought the LP when I really needed to buy gas for my VW beetle. VainAndy, I know you have expressed similiar feelings about ATWIAD. Maybe another listen might change your mind. I know it changed mine. Yes, it's definately a great album and I love it from start to finish. Even back in the day, I had listened to it enough to like all the tracks before the next album came out. I got all the way into it and then I was like "OK Prince, this is different and it has turned out to be a good album afterall. Now, get your ass back in the studio and let's get back to business as usual....making a cold as ice synthesized BAD ASS album!" When "Parade" came out, I was really ready to throw it against the wall, and I really started listening to "Around The World In A Day" even more then. Nothing like a dead new album to make the previous one really sound good. I can see why you would love "Around The World In A Day" today from the first listen. You've been a fan as long as I have and have lived through the style change and the disappointment of Prince never going back to what he used to be. You're still a fan today throughout all these years and so am I. We've seen all the diverse directions Prince has gone so we are used to it by now and listen to the albums with different ears than we had back then. Since you didn't listen to it much back then, you are really hearing it now for the first time without the expectations of the actual "great" Prince years from 1978-1984. I love the album and my only problem was that it was released too soon and ended a really great party that had been going on for years. Even though I love the album, would I sacrifice it for a few more years of the "old Prince" and Prince possibly being retired now like the other artists of that era?.....Hell yeah! . . [Edited 4/28/06 11:22am] And there it is. ATWIAD really did make a complete turn away from the party mode that we were all in during the 80's listening to Prince, Rick James and the Time. I am listening to ATWIAD after hearing Batman, and Grafitti Bridge. And you are right about a dead new album that makes the old album sound better and better. I am thinking that Prince was really ahead of his time on many of this albums. It has just taken me time to catch up. "Remember, one man's filler is another man's killer" -- Haystack | |
