Why i now love the ONA cd, you will too!.

Well last night i drove through the place i grew up and pulled up outside my first school where i started at the age of around 5. Whilst remembering tonnes of stuff whilst the sun was setting my Led Zepp cd didn't seem to fit the moment. So i fumbled through all this years ONA bootlegs and stumbled across a dusty covered ONA piano cd, i put it in and gave it as 2nd chance. Damn , i was floored, i take back EVERYTHING negative i said. This is a cd you listen and feel when you get emotional, it was simply perfect and was a great soundtrack as i gently drove around the old i grew up around.
So please , to all those that weren't too keen on this cd first time round put it on at the right time and you will truley feel it.
Thanks Prince.

ONA is shit. Plain and simple. Peoples fanatisism to Prince may cloud their judgement. But it is really quite shit!

This person realized that ONA is grown folks music. It is not ear candy that is immediately sweet to the taste. YOu cant dance to it. This kind of music requiresthat you sit and listen. It is beautiful and should not be taken lightly

ONA has a lot of beauty contained within it...and unlike many other Prince albums, this one won't put you in a mood, you almost have to already be there when you listen to it...

I think one reason some find themselves not really liking it is because there's no energy to the album...at all...it's 35 minutes of one continuous emotional level with melodies that are sometimes rather subtle and take a few listens before they take hold of you...because of that, ONA could easily fall into the catagory of "Played it, didn't immediately grab me, so now it's back on the shelf"...

I love it, though...but I'm also a Crowded House fan...and their albums were always known as they type you listen to 3-4 times before you find yourself sucked into the subtle beauty of Neil Finn's melodies...and once you are, those melodies just fuse themselves into you forever...ONA isn't quite as good as those Crowded House CDs...but after 2-3 listens the subtle beauty of the melodies does start to sink into you and stay there...and you find yourself loving the album more and more...

I hear what you are saying. And there hasnt been a single Prince album that has pulled me in on the very first listen. Some will get me after a couple of listens, some will take longer, some die out pretty rapid like, and some just keep going and going. But ONA has done none of the above... at all!

Sure, if you give something enough spins, it will grab you in some way or another. Even the most purile, obnoxious crap (Phil Collins! Yeuch!) will have some elements that will have a very subtle 'pull' on a person. But when the sum of the parts never seem to make a whole, and after repeated listens in a vain attempt to force the parts together it still does not make for a wholesome experience, then it is time to accept that that particular piece of music just aint 'your cup of tea'.

And in that respect, I find ONA dull, tuneless to a certain extent (some of the parts notwithstanding) and lyrically quite amateurish. It feels thrown together quickly with a 'made up on the spot' feel to it.

Now I like Princes music, obviously, or I wouldnt be here or a member of the club. But just because he is Prince, and just because I think he is one of the greatest musician/song writers of the modern era, does not mean that it should cloud my judgement and force me to state my liking for something I simply do not like.

Naturally this is all an opinion, just like some may say Lovesexy is the best. Well in that vain, ONA is the worst - I can honestly say that I think it is a pile of shit. Just like Phil Collins!

I hear what some of you say, but i felt the sam ethings too i.e. it sounds rushed, unfinished, all sounds the same and above all it was a huge missed opportunity but last night when i was caught up in the emotional zone the cd took on a whole new dimension and changed my opinion. Next time you're in 'the zone' put it on and see.

Well, your advice goes with any Prince album.
Some of his cds just take a while to "sink in".
