No, the show he's going to be on is The Appentice, where Donald gives him a project, but he's fired for lack of promotion.

Now that I want to see!!

I love American Idol and watch it every week!! I have no problem with major artists appearing there-- Stevie Wonder, Elton John, Rod Stewart-- have been remarkable in helping these young talents!! I say, it was missed opportunity on Prince's part. However, if he's going to do it, it's not to promote 3121 but because of a "sincere" desire to help them. There are other ways Prince can promote 3121 and he has not done ANYTHING in the last month!! So please stop ragging on American Idol. It can do without Prince!!

Or rather, we all can do without that god-awful show.

Seeing Queen on there was good enough for me. Brian May looked liked he was getting pissed with each contestant.

I'm sorry but you can totally tell by the tone of the dudes statement that he's bitter because Prince said "NO!".

Well, I totally can't tell that. The show means nothing to me, but it IS a huge, huge hit that just about any musician would love to get a piece of. For all we know, Prince approached THEM and was turned down. But I'll accept the statement as true.
[Edited 4/27/06 21:48pm]

Yeah, I'm with Jarret on this one . . .

I don't even watch American Idol, but any time the man has a chance to get in front of 30 MILLION PEOPLE and do his thing LIVE in front of a largely untapped potential fan base, he should take it. Oh yeah . . . for ONE HOUR. With young singers in tribute, opening his music up to a whole new audience? Why WOULDN'T he do that again? JEEZ! Can you imagine that? I'm stuck on imagining him do "Fury" live (like SNL) but for 30 MILLION PEOPLE! Don't get me started on the "staples" like one of the new kids doing "Purple Rain" or "If Eye Was Ur Girlfriend" . . .

I don't care what anyone else says, there's NO WAY a Prince appearance on American Idol could have been bad unless he talked too much. But you typically don't have to worry about that with him anyway. Talking too little, maybe . . .

But that's just me thinking like . . . well, somebody who actually cares if 3121 sells or not. As Prince has proven throughout his career, when it comes to promotion, he often misses the "no-brainers."

I know for a fact the Eagles have consistently turned down requests to sing their songs on the show.

Im still tuning in this coming Tuesday cuz they haven't said who the guest will be this week which is odd since they always say a week ahead. This leads me to think either they are not having a theme or guest and having the singers choose whatever or they want it to be a surprise in which case it could still possibly be the purple one.

Suit yourself. That's some pretty massive exposure when you've got a CD to promote.

i would love to see him do it nod i've said that from the beginning of the show.... but, come on, we know that prince could never really pull that off. he is painfully shy and does not like talking to people like that.... he just could/would never make it in a situation like that sad

i'd love to see it, but i believe it will never happen shrug

I disagree with that, I no that Prince isnt shy,He may be painfully Proud, but painfully shy? no babe gurl, it use to b cute 4him to "act shy", but actually being shy,Prince openly used tha word Fuck when it was still a dirty word. Shy people dont do flamborant things like that, only clever wolves in sheep skin

American Idol producers abviously don't know Prince. He is not a Simon, Paula, nor Randy. They would want him to in 3 mins allowed per song and make an analysis of each perform an then critize them. That's like a bad parent saying that their kids suck. He won't do that, are they crazy!!!!!

Musically, critically (for the contestants), and publicity-wise (for Prince), it would be a great idea for him to make an appearance. But the show itself stands for everything he rallied against back in the day, namely the complete control over a musician by the record company. AI wants to produce a product, not an artist.

Like most of the other "reality" shows glutting the airwaves these days, AI is anything but real. It's an entertaining (by some standards) farce that has lulled a gullible public into thinking that they are really choosing the next big singing sensation.
The fact that Prince isn't going to be on the show obviously isn't hurting it's ratings, but it speaks volumes in terms of Prince as an artist by the simple fact that he would rather see his CD slide down the charts than receive a sales jump from appearing on the show. It also speaks volumes on just what a crock AI really is. After all, Prince has appeared on The View, so we know he's not above slumming. lol
But the bigger question still remains. Forget AI, why did all the promotion stop?

When I saw Prince on his 'Musicology' tour in Sydney, Australia, he at one point exclaimed, "Real music by real musicians!!" It felt great to hear him say that. smile

Prince is without-a-doubt one of the greatest contemporary musicians of the 20th Century, and now into the 21st Century. In a class of his own making, with very few peers.

Please accept that he would not condone a pathetic insult to the cultivation of music such as (as I call it) "American Anus". It is a TV show about TV ratings, about exploiting (mostly) deluded karaoke singers; and with rare exception these people (and the show) are not even within a light-year of Prince's capabilities.

He said "no" pure and simple - I can assure you. And yeh the producers' egos are bruised - but then none of them have any real musical talent either. I can sadly say that "American Anus" and its international spin-offs have done much more harm than good to the current music industry.

Kiddies: to be a star takes talent, and a great deal of practice. YEARS AND YEARS. Even Prince works at his craft daily. He lives and breathes it. Steve Vai plays guitar 8 hours a day. Queen were/are all highly-skilled musicians, singers, and songwriters. Frank Zappa is the greatest contemporary musician of the 20th Century, and he personified what it is to be "a musician". It takes an exceptional capability to be "exceptional". Singing one or two karaoke songs shows nothing more than the ability to imitate. Get a reality-grip. Stop using "American Anus" as a gauge of talent and skill - it isn't close to remotely qualified. Go buy a Frank Zappa record. Go listen to Steely Dan. Buy Queen's "Greatest Hits". Buy Prince's "Purple Rain" and "Sign o' The Times". That's a start. Now study them, and ask yourselves what makes these artists who they are, and understand the insurmountable talent, skill, and craftsmanship that separates them from most of the contemporary music industry today, including the bottom-of-the-barrel dregs in which "American Anus" thrives. Please. Educate yourself with something that can teach you to aspire higher than the first rung of the ladder. We'll all be better for it in the end.

PS. And somebody sack Paula Abdul for her insensitive and ignorant comments re Freddie Mercury and Queen the other week. Loser.

"Real music by real musicians!" - Prince cool

How can you assure us? confused

And why are you getting your knickers in a twist about American Idol? (You don't really call it "American Anus" do you?)

The music industry is wide and varied and there's room for the "talentless karaoke singers". Just ignore it if you don't like it.

Sorry to ressurect this topic after it's been quiet for a couple of weeks, but I've been away and it it is still a featured topic...
Can anyone seriously imagine Prince engaging with and being encouraging to (even talented?) amateurs singing his material in that environment? Didn't he make derisive comments in the past about Idol? or at least that "bad singer guy" Kenny? Kevin Hong or something similar? He's more likely to sabotage the whole thing. I mean you've all said it already really. I was very surprised by the 'rumour'. Guess I'll have to eat my words if it ever came to anything.

... wow ... so he changed his mind. Good on ya P - great mini-set - abuse that show's 'Pied Piper' effect for yo' good-self - glad u let the audience see 5 mins of talent on that otherwise embarrassing excuse for a talent-show ... hope it gets some of those people buying your music and getting a badly-needed education into what talent REALLY IS ... cool
