'American Idol' producer debunks Prince appearance report

"American Idol" Executive Producer Ken Warwick has debunked a printed report that Prince was going to perform on the Fox TV talent competition.

"I don't honestly know" where the rumor came from, Warwick told Zap2it.com. "It was kind of something that I heard on the daily buzz through the office but was never actually put under my nose."

The story was first reported by the New Post's Page Six gossip column.


Warwick said the show never initiated talks with Prince and doesn't really need to go looking for stars.

"There's a queue from the record companies, as you can probably imagine because we have 30 million people-plus each week tune in, and so we don't need to go hunting, as it were," he said.

"American Idol's" ratings are up 14 percent over last year, which Warwick attributes to the contestants.

"We've got a soul singer, a rock singer, a country singer, a Barbra Streisand (type), we've got a crooner," he said. "It's that diversity, I think, that keeps people interested. This year more than ever, the public have really hooked into these kids."

We wont he just admit that Prince knocked them back?

The rumor spread like wildfire after it was first reported by the New York Post's Page Six gossip column, which stated that the artist was being pressured into appearing on the show in order to keep his new album, “3121,” near the top of the album charts.


Backtracking a bit, Warrick said if any talks with Prince did occur, he had absolutely nothing to do with it.

In other Prince news, the reclusive star was spotted in Las Vegas last weekend at nightclub Pure. He was reportedly given the key to the club’s exclusive Red Room, where he spent the night sipping on Long Island iced teas with a lady friend.

I'm sorry but you can totally tell by the tone of the dudes statement that he's bitter because Prince said "NO!". Thank god. That would be the icing on the cake as far as cheese goes. I think he would get exposed, but it's American Idol...and that's lame!

i would love to see him do it i've said that from the beginning of the show.... but, come on, we know that prince could never really pull that off. he is painfully shy and does not like talking to people like that.... he just could/would never make it in a situation like that

Something to be said for integrity. American Idol is a farse and a gimmick.
A young talented friend of mine with the looks and a voice that could knock bricks off buildings,tried out two years ago. Cut in the 3rd round. I saw the folks who made it in the round she was cut. It's a joke of a show.

I thought the show was wank before she tried out too, but it was an immediate outlet for her to be seen. The majority of the folks on don't need to be seen. It's a reality show.
