The rating I would give this album is actually the biggest compliment I could pay to a new Prince album. This album should be the new yardstick with which to measure all future Prince albums. Rather than asking if the next one is as good as Sign of the Times , Purple Rain, etc...it should be : Is it as good as 3121?

Cuz 3121 is very good.

(Note: This by no means is meant to imply a comparison between Prince's classic albums and 3121! Just that Prince deserves to have the page turned on his career and for us fans to use a realistic, more modern measuring stick)

I give it about a 3, maybe a 3.5. Love by itself gets a 5 though, maybe even a 6 or 7 smile

4.5 I'd give it straight 5 because I love it, but that would be wrong, it'd put it up there with sott and 1999!

News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so.

Interesting guys..

so the concensus, flicking through the responses, is a mode of 3.5

A few 4's, very few 5's, and very few less than 3.

So- interesting thread- I think the general feel of opinion for the album has come out well and clear.

A good, solid pop album. Enjoyable and accessable.

Very few comments see this as Prince at his best.. simply a new direction.

Maybe this album was Prince relaxing a bit more, having a bit more fun, and also making a concerted effort at a Hit record!

Who knows! after a few months, we'll c what the sales look like.

seems to be doing well commercially. Thanks for participating in the poll smile

BTW, I think "amazing" has been an adjective very few have used for this album..

most say good. Is it Prince at his best? I like to think of it as a new direction, possibly a small diversion.. who knows what the guy is thinking!

Peace

I think that's fair regarding the album as a whole... there are moments, though... like, I definitely think that "The Word" by itself, is definitely Prince at his best.

Favorite Track: Love
Least Favorite: Hard to pick . . . Beautiful, Loved & Blessed {?}

I don't think I've listened to a new Prince disc so many times in a row in many many years. . . head & shoulders above Musicology. Probably the last time I was so thrilled with a Prince album was The Gold Experience. Not as great as the classic 80's albums, but still up there. . .time will tell.

I'll give it a 2 or 3, probably a 3. I don't really like how he is paying homage so much to the "old" prince, He is very backwards looking on this album, the old prince was never backwards looking.

It also strikes me as one of those albums where a lot of the songs would sound 100x better performed live, ala Sign of the times. I came to this conclusion after hearing the live version of fury. I prefer if prince recorded his albums with a live band, like the symbol album, if you know what I mean. I like it though, Because it's prince, and it will probably grow on me confused.

You're right there, if you group "consistent, catchy and fun" together, but I actually prefer The Rainbow Children in terms of consistency and overall daring.

4.5, not a classic (5) but better than excellent (4) so definitely superior (4.5) Songs like Black Sweat, Love, Fury and B.L.B. are amongst the little red corvettes and adores.

I was thinking this was his best record since Diamonds and Pearls but I like it better than D&P, Graffitti Bridge and the Batmand Sndt. This may even be better and more consistent that Lovesexy. I too can't stop listening to this record. Nothing groundbreaking or original but it's nice to have the catchy dance, rock, pop thing going again. Like I said before if he comes out with five more records like this I would not be disapointed. I have purchased all of his releases, News, TRC, Musicology and those records don't even compare at this point. Love the TRC for it's music but the in-between banter was -unlistenable.
