its like having an eunach in a brothel-if 3121 doesnt do it for you then just quit and go back to purple rain.the breadth and diversity of this artists last 5 years is unsurpassed(expectation to musicology-NEWS to 3121)

since emancipation weve had "free"prince triple disc followed by a 5 disc set-EIGHT cds-that got moaned about.

we had rave-"commercial"prince-that got moaned about-then we had rave in2-moan moan-

we had "underground experimental"prince-rainbow children,xenophobia,xpectation,NEWS-moaned about

we had ANOTHER 4 discs this time a boxed set"one night alone"-soundchecks,aftershows -yes they got moaned about.

NPG AUDIO-christ he even did 12 hours of radio with dozens of new songs-moaned about.

even if only 10% of 'em complained, it'd still seem like a lot

3121 makes me very happy, but some had different expectations
personally i'd like to see A LOT more songs like "Love" & "The Word"
kinda like 1999 meets Lovesexy
but i know a whole lotta other people wouldn't

If you pay close attention, you'll notice that it's usually the same people complaining again and again, repeating their whinings over and over again.. i think they actually make up a small percentage of P's fandom.. well they may be litle, but they're loud..

You're angry? I've been tired of the whining and complaining for years lol. Some of these folks are hyper-critical. I swear its like these folks feel they are the genius an Prince is some sort of extension of there desires. Like a puppet that won't move right sometimes.

It kills me how often I read the words 'cringe' and 'embarrassed' in reference to Prince. Or how this or that song is one I'll be skipping. Maybe I'm old school (from the vinyl days) but we didn't spend so much time skipping to the "good" songs. When you let a CD just play you may find years down the road the beauty of something u originally thought was "bad" or just ok. Plus u appreciate the high points more when there are low and medium ones too.

I guess with this instant gratification era and the stripping of songs just for their best parts (i.e. sampling) people have gotten used to only having the most intense experience. What happened to subtlety? That's why so many can overlook something as beautiful has TAC. They are so intent on being blown out of the water that they can't hear it. It doesn't give them the rush they desire.

You don't really get threads with the title, "this love you have for 3121 - I'm getting angry!' but it would be just as valid, everyone is entitled to their opinions and not even Prince is above criticism. Gauging whether an album is 'good' or not is a difficult proposition. If you asked someone on the street whether they expected Prince fans to like the new Prince album, their response would likely be, 'Well, yeah, they're fans, aren't they?!' but in fact, as seen on here, the opinions vary hugely and criticisms can be scathing.

Here's an analogy: ask someone if they liked a particular painting, they might say, 'Yes. It's got pretty colours'. Ask someone who has some background knowledge, they might expound on the history of the artist, themes they can see in the painting from previous work, put it in the context of his body of work. That to me would be a far more valid and worthy critique, looking beyond the immediate surface imagery. And that is what fans on here do - they basically use 'comparitive analysis', putting this album in the context of all the others, plus plain just saying whether they enjoy it or not. All that adds upto quite a balanced set of reviews, in my opinion. There's no way Prince can please all the people all the time, but if he pleases you, then why should someone else critiquing him effect your opinions? And why is it important to frown on theirs?

wow you nailed it perfectly.. Actually i'm glad P isn't totally giving in to the 1,2 seconds attention-span generation.. Indeed there's a lot to be enjoyed in TAC, even more in the dance perhaps, which has to be rated among the best stuff he's ever put out

I'm sure that people will start appreciating 3121 a lot more as time passes by, if they can get to giving it half a chance..

Personally, its not the differences in opinion that bother me the most, its the negatively in the language used in some posts. P fucked up this...fucked up that. As if they could do better. Just except the art and the artist for what they are and enjoy the overall picture. If P released 20 sumthin albums that sounded like Purple Rain u'd still b complaining. How many artists of his statue (and I don't mean height) who have been around that long are still trying to push the envelope. Probably could count them on one hand. Wake up and smell the purple roses!

ah nevermind that though. The people that have heard 3121 have given both good and bad reviews. most of the opinions i've read about the album have been good.

I've noticed people tend to follow in many posts. Complete threads with 30-40 posts either completely positive or negative about TRC or 3121 etc!!

When 3121 leaked and people were posting about it, I found it strange, personally I have to listen to new music a few times if not a few weeks to see how it grows on me. I don't come on here as much because some get over analytical about the new stuff, I like to enjoy the music and not listen to it comparing it like its a painting. I just wanna have fun!

For the record, I don't unconditionally love everything P does. Interesting critisism for someone who says, "I haven't liked a single thing Prince has done for the last decade" (my advice - save ur money, sounds like the P u like lived only in the 80s). Neither do I feel that P has ever "duped" me, no matter what I think of his albums. He doen't owe me anything. I pay my money to be entertained by an artist, not a court jester who should loose his head if he displeases me. As for "shitty ditties since '96", many of these ditties are among my faves. If people don't like them I can respect that, as long as they get off their high horses before giving their opinion.

I'd gladly criticise it to his face if he were open to it. My views wouldn't be wholly critical and I wouldn't pan the album as a whole, but I can find fault in most of the tracks from the new album. It's not a perfect album and never could be. I'm sure I'd find many things to praise also.
