Chocolate Invasion & BS

When I heard BS - the first thing that struck my mind was "Bamboozled" - on Chocolate Invasion. In fact bamboozled, Sex me baby Sex me not, and Silicon all have the same sound. Is BS just a junked song from that era?

It's possible I guess - it does have a similar vibe to some of the 2001 downloads, but I think Prince prefers to keep his albums fairly "fresh" - especially a lead single.

(yeah I know BS isn't technically a lead single, but you know what I mean)

Considering he was performing this during the Musicology tour during the acoustic section we know it's at least 2 yrs. old, I love the song, it does have a hint of Sex Me, Sex Me Not and Silicon and when I sing the chorus in my head I always fall in2 "Willing 2 Do The Work" which also dates back 2 at least 2001.

Likely, but of course it does not PROOF that this version/recording is 2 years old.

yeah...I had the same thought when I first heard the song and I asked this question in the BS discussioin thread, but it's worth it 2 ask again:

Did we underrate the early 00's tunes or are we overrating BS?

What a little hype or the lack of it can do...

I'm lovin' BS, btw

Well it does not sound like the 'current' Prince. No sex (only g-rated), no profanity no blah blah blah, that has been missing from his music since 19 90-something. Sounds like NPGMC year 1, and I love it. I loved all of the tunes from Daisy Chain, to Judas, to Sex Me, Silicon and others.

If they are old, give it to me, i'll take more.

Yea I totally agree. I think we all would've been as excited if, in 2001, Prince actually released Judas Smile as a single, or really promoted Undisputed in the mainstream. It's wierd, but a song becomes more appealing when you know others, who won't automatically like it because their prince fans, are listening in. That feeling has been missing for sometime because Prince has ALWAYS released the worst song on the record for his single - (te amo included); while the hidden gems go unnoticed by the masses either in obscure downloads or hidden tracks (wasted kisses i'm thinking of here).

3121 will be better cause he's had a lot of time to dig.

This is why a lot of the initial praise towards Black Sweat was met with some cynicism.

After years of churning out identi-kit songs like Black Sweat, what makes this one so different? confuse

I think it's just the excitement of a new album, single, video etc after a relatively long period.

This is not identikit, there is some freshness in the production which has been missing from his last few years

Yeah, seriously, much better beats in BS, and better vocals too. Although I do like Daisy Chain and My Medallion a lot.

me too , I prefer the songs released exclusively through the NPGMC in year 1 to everything hes released since actually , including TRC , ONA ,Snoozicology etc . People go on about how funky 1+1+1=3 is , listen to Daisy Chain , S&M groove , my medallion , all funkier , more complete and just plain better songs .

Where exactly?..... You have heard the NPGMC year one stuff haven't you? It's cut from the same cloth.

Let's agree to disagree!! Although without sounding patronising, most people have heard a reinvigorated sound in the new single, it's not just my opinion. check out the good vibe on this site!!

I don’t think that’s right. There is a lot of excitement over something new being released, that’s all. I personally don’t hear anything new in BS.

But then, I don’t think this is what is gonna appear on the album anyway. Im hoping there is a different incarnation sitting on the LP…

Isnt it a bit odd that before the albums release weve already been exposed to four of the trax? Unless they are different on the album then on a 12 song album we have already heard a third of it a good month before its even released…

What's different about it? Hum...let's see....The beat has a brazen, fuck-you kick about it that's been lacking throughout his more recent R&B inspired stuff since the early '90s...(Something that Chocolate Invasion and ect lacked)

It's the most loose and care free performance we've heard from the man on record in ages...Not to mention that it's not weighed down by the religious or "remember the good ol days" obsessions that have polarized his recent work...

There's no pretentious noodling to this funk...just a straight ahead, balls-out goove...

And it's his most successful attempt at putting the "weird ass" Prince stamp on comtempoary R&B since "Get Off"

Just my two cents...

No, I dont actually... I dont care what he does. In fact "rocking out" as you put it would stir even less anticipation in the next release for me. All im saying is BS sounds old even tho its new. It SOUNDS of an era I was not that impressed with. Im sorry if I cant pretend to want to kiss Prince’s nutsack over this new song (and the other 3 ive heard).

The problem here is you (and others) get yourselves all wound up and stressed out by people like me that don’t start creaming in our pants at the drop of every single new note the man plays. It riles you. It annoys you to the point that you feel you have to somehow come out and defend the man to your proverbial death.

At the end of the day, mediocrity is in the eye of the beholder, and what I have heard so far is mediocre. I genuinely hope that the album is far better than the first impressions I have, but im not going to kid myself and jump on the dick-sucking bandwagon just for the sake of it.

I think you will find that “they” who dare to critisize come from a much more varied and differently opinionated ilk than those who blindly follow.

It seems a bit of a lame argument that people are so desperate for new music that they will love anything he releases. When 'Black Sweat' was made available, i heard so much good feeling from my fellow orgers because it is really a step up from previous stuff.

I seem to remember there wasn't much excitment when the Musicology single was released, even el corazon. Even then, everyone was champing at the bit for new stuff.
