Is there really a color version of Under the Cherry Moon?

Rumor has it... but I've never seen it or heard of it. Just want to know if it really exists.

Consider it Prince's "Bigfoot Sasquatch".

It's rumored to be true... but is it really out there... somewhere... lurking...
The public is squeezin' you kiddo. You'd better kick ass on your next album or else!

I think I saw it as I was on vacation in the Rocky Mountains, but it was just too quick to get the focus right for a shot with the 35mm, plus it was a cherry moon and the night light just wasn't right without a flayesh

I'm a bit of a Nayroo, sorry...

Didn't I read somewhere it was shot in color then made black and white?

Or maybe I'm getting paisley senility after over 25 years.

Yes, that is true. Colour film is cheaper than black and white film.

Page 91 of Hahn's Possesed: The Rise and Fall of Prince, confirms a compromise was made to film in color then transfer to black and white if Prince did not change his mind about B/W. More interesting is that Warner's execs also filmed an alternate ending (one where Christopher does not die, and gets the girl...i.e. a HAPPY ENDING), page 94.

Since the major problem in the film (THE MAJOR ONE) is that the CT character is so shallow and such a self-parody that you simply don't feel the sense of tragedy, this would be a great correction in the film.

Publicist Howard Bloom put it best "WB insisted on him getting the girl in the end and it really worked.... that little asshole of a character that was so hard to identify with, you bonded with him by the end." Ibid, p. 94

Every once in while i play the movie on the plasma at my cajun and BBQ parties. People never of course saw this movie and comment they liked the movie (it was funny and goofy to watch Prince be silly). I removed the last 12 minutes and told them the tape broke and just tell them he gets the girl in the end. No need to expose them to "we had fun didn't we?"
I may have the jelly 4 ur peanut butta but u got 31 hours and 21 minutes left.

Honestly...eye showed it 2 a bunch of friends n they didnt even motice that it was in B/W til eye pointed it out 2 them. It was not a necessary thing 2 comprehend while watching.

Yet another bunch of friends didn't realize it was a B/W really til he said.."Naw eye think eye like the blue one." when commenting on tricky's wardrobe dilema. wink

Eye did c the mountians outakes as well...in color. Eye always jus assumed it was transfered over 2 B/W. Never really thought bout it til now. smile

Especially after that line eye jus figured it was Prince's was of jokin round.

I think it is generally believed that no colour version exists. The film was shot in colour because Warners didn't want Prince to do a black & white movie and I guess they hoped they could convince him out of it when it was done, but they couldn't. The colour was removed before editing - so at the very least, there would be no edited version of the film, just the original raw footage. Some of this original unedited colour footage is seen in the bootlegged behind the scenes Mountains video footage that is floating around.

Would have made a great special option for the DVD...

I had to send my copy back - it was encoded poorly.

I think the color version of the mountains video actually aired on MTV back in the day. I vaguely remember seeing the video once in a while when I was younger, and it was in color at the time.

mountains was produced and edited and released to MTV in color and then processed in B&w for the movie. A lot of the movie looks that way too, true B&W just looks different. It's kind of like in Schindler's List when they switch to the scenes with the colorized little girl, the entire tone of the film changed, and you could tell that you were then seeing a color film stock with B&W footage printed to it.
