First Prince album you bought.....on its release date.

I guess we all remember the first Prince album spent our money on but what was the first album you waited on? The first album you picked up on it's release date, the one you couldn't wait to buy? Mine was Lovesexy in 1988 when i was 14. I bought SOTT about two weeks after it's release but by 1988 i was such a huge fan it was first day purchasing by then. Buying Lovesexy was interesting too, the guy who served me couldn't bear to look at the sleeve(i bought it on cassette and vinyl) and my friends at school would borrow it and turn the cassette inlay inside out so no one could see it! So what was your first first day purchase?

I got hooked on Purple Rain (gosh, I was 13 then), and I bought all following albums on the release date up until Symbol... Those were the days

The Hits / The B-Sides. After seeing him play on the Act II tour, I knew I had a lot of catching up to do. Up until then, I think I only had prince, D+P and Graffiti Bridge...

Ever since then I've bought them on release date, except for NPS, which wasn't carried by any stores in Colorado Springs, where I was at the time - I ended up ordering it from Amazon, I think. Of course, 'release date' became an amorphous term when he started shipping stuff directly through New Funk / NPGMC - I got Crystal Ball, One Nite Alone and others way after some other people.

ya can't really go out and get his new albums on the release date anymore like you used to be able to do...there's always some kind of download or preview or some other dealie that takes the punch out of going to the wrecka stow on day one and cracking the shrinkwrap for the first time.

Yeah thats true and it kinda takes away some of the romance of buying music. The most excited i ever got with a first day purchase was Emancipation..then i listened to it.

I am yet to buy a album on it's release date. Mostlikely, I will never. My time is more importaint then anyone's music. I buy it when I get around to it, often for other reasons such as I am out shopping for that day and I pass by a store that might sell such an object.

On release date??? Get outta town.

my answer is ATWIAD up through Emancipation. Then I took my time but that was his last proper release.

I'm pretty sure I bought 'Around The World In A Day' on the day of release. I still buy Prince albums that are released in stores the week of release if not the day of. The one exception was the 'One Nite Alone' box set. That one was hard to find and I eventually bought it on ebay a few weeks later.

Yep, on the release.

Now, CDs were another story. Upgrade issues. Do I really want CDs? What the Hell, Get the Prince CDs! But, I should be faithful to his vinyl albums, right? No, no, go ahead and get the CDs, this is what is happening now!

So, after I went through that conversation in my head, I broke down and brought my first CD player when I purchased my first Prince CD. (true story...)

According to Billboard, I "bought" Musicology 4 times. lol

I couldn't get enough of the collectable non-descript sleeve it came with.

No longer make it priority to buy a Prince record on day of release, I'll get it when I get it.

Prince "For You" - 1978
It has the original "Burbank" WB label logo. I hear that's worth something now. It's still in fair condition.

Damn, when did I get old!? sad
