Can Someone Explain the Song "White Mansion"

I have been reading the lyrics for "White Mansion" and I just want to get an understanding of this song. I am picking up on a cocaine reference, am I wrong? What time period was this recorded? Is there a story that goes with this song.

Prince bought Mayte a big white mansion and was singing about it in this song as far as I know.

Here's my explanation, he was in another creative slump so he made a shitty song.
"You need people like me so you can point your fuckin' fingers and say, "That's the bad guy." "

I love that song, it's hopeful, about his relationship when he was with Mayte. It's a cute song.

I believe it's about his Paisley Park studio, as a creative refuge...

I have always thought that this was a "dream" song, similar to what he did on NPG -Exodus. It sounds as if he is dreaming/wishing that he could go back and re-do his contract when he first signed on with WB. If he did, imagine the possibilities. Where would he be now?

The white mansion in Spain was not bought until after New Power Soul came out (I remember him talking about how they named it New Power Soul because that album paid for it) so that can't be the explanation.

I'm pretty sure the "covered in snow" reference is alluding to Minnesota (and all the snow we get here) and the big white mansion is Paisley Park.

I thought it was about an aspiring artist saying he was going to make it one day and falling in love with a woman who makes him cut his hair, but at the end it was all a dream, a fantasy, a wish. That's why he says "Maybe one day." I love that song. I have my own video for it pictured in mt head

Isn't it about a young blood dreaming of making it in the record biz, encountering its pitfalls, and still dreaming of that Big White Mansion (a generic symbol of success)?

I love that song, great groove. I think it's about Paisley Park. he talks about "not selling publishing rights" and hanging out in Mpls. It's his dream come true when he built paisley park.

To me the fact that he stayed in his hometown and built a recording studio and soundstage to rehearse shows he really is all about the music. 99% of the other artists who make it big move to LA or NYC, date models and forget about making music once they get rich.

Since dude is into singing about his houses and riches, let's see how long it takes him to start singing the blues over that $5 million Toronto mortgage.

Did anyone read the lyrics? It's all right there, what's to define. Just because a song uses the word 'white' doesn't mean it's about coke. Actually 'snow' references are usually more likely to be about coke. Like 'Old Friends 4 Sale' for instance. The song is about Prince as an aspring artist, ('sell my publishing what a laugh') and 'dreaming' as many of you said about when he's going to be famous. It's just sort of a reflection but sung in the futuristic sense. Good track though.

You guys...

I believe it to be a bible reference.

The bible talks of everyone having a mansion in heaven. Jesus told his deciples that he goes to make a new home for us in heaven.

I believe it to be about being eager to get to heaven and getting away from the mudane life he felt he had here.

"One day I'll live in a big white mansion at the top of the road. I'm gonna wear the latest fasion and be happy don't you know."

I'm supprised no one mentioned this? I thought you guys knew his pattern by now.

I thought it was pretty straight forward.

He now has a white mansion in Minnesota (covered in snow)...

In other words, he made it.

Tom

I read a while back that it had something to do with Versace, and his mansion. Or was partially inspired by it. Its been a while so i really don't recall the source, but that may point you in the right direction.

A White Mansion at the top of it all, to me, simply means a reference to wealth and success, looking down on the rest of society, but the paradox of still not being happy.

Alright..after giving it another listen (lol..thanks soulflower) this is what I came up with...which is pretty much what everyone else did.

The beginning of the song, to me, is what his dreams were (to live in a white mansion at the top of the road..wearing the lastest fashion, then he would be happy, money and fame would finally make him happy), then later he attempts to get a gig and is turned down which made him so low he's reachin' up for the ground..still thinking that when he gets that white mansion he'll be happy. Then, he gets signed and he makes comment of not wanting to give up his publishing rights and that he does know math, so he figured all that out, also that they may have wanted him to cut his hair as he made reference to that. lol So, he is signed, he has his white mansion and wearing the latest fashion, but that didn't make him happy as he used to think it would. Then he's speaking of him and another living in the white mansion (him and Mayte maybe?), wearing the latest fashion, but he's still not happy...maybe one day. That basically all of those things that he thought would make him happy, didn't...and he's still missing something else.

I dunno..but that's what I got out of it. Basically what everyone else did.
