What is Your LEAST FAVORITE PRINCE album and WHY?

I'm gonna say VAULT. I just don't like it Much. I don't feel a Good Flow like the other albums.

I would go with Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic, even though I really enjoy the Rave In2 remix album. I think it's his most diluted album - it sounds like he's second guessing himself all the way through, with maybe a pause here or there for some kinda inspired music. I didn't like the Rave In2 concert that's on DVD either. He just seemed so creatively constipated, like his energy was way off or something. Blecch.

Rave, for the same reason Anxiety pointed out, except, I don't like Rave In2 either.

"N.E.W.S." 4 songs, all instrumental, all 13:00 minutes long, 'nuff said

but what about the instrumentals did you not like? do you just not like instrumental music in general, or do you think prince is bad at making instrumentals?

"Newpower Soul" or "Prince". I'll maybe go for the latter, at least NPS can be somewhat weird at times, if that's of any value in itself.

I thought NEWS was SO NICE. It was NEW AGEY. PEACEFUL. I LIKE when PRINCE TRIES NEW GENRES and I THINK he EXCELLS with his EFFORTS. As a FAN I REALLY ENJOY PRINCE'S ORCHESTRATIOn. I used to TELL EVERYONE how PARADE was SO MUSICALLY PERFECT ..It was his BEST ALBUM. He just CREATES BEAUTY IN HIS WORK. I WISH PEOPLE COULD GET OVER HIS LOOKS and IMAGE OR SEXUALITY ISSUES TO REALLY ABSORB HIS TALENT. SUCH BIAS IT'S UNREAL. He's SO WONDERFUL A TALENt ...CAN'T YA FEEL HIM? I AM PUTTINg RAINBOW CHILDREN FOR MY DAILY AFFIRMATIOn RIGHT NOW and I will GIVE PRINCE HIS ACCOLADES TODAY. I LOVE U! biggrin

I would have to say Diamonds and Pearls. I love Insatiable and Money, but I can't really listen to the others. I was happy when the Symbol album came out.

D&P isn't one of my favorites, either...though there are some fantastic songs on there. "gett off", "thunder" and "willing & able", especially.

Not surprising, since as I understand it was just a bunch of songs thrown together to make an album for contract fulfillment purposes. confused

I don't really get into most of the more recent stuff, starting with NPS. Except I do like both versions of Rave, and more so Musicology, though I wouldn't rank any of that up there with his classics from the 80's. TRC, NEWS, C-Note, Xpectation; ONA; the various songs collected on CI and the Slaughterhouse; the other singles I've heard: it's not all bad, but none of that is anything that I've ever wanted to listen to over and over. But I did like Glass Cutter. biggrin

i think there was a method to the madness and a message behind the chaos on 'the vault'. most of the material selected had a jazz sound going on...this was just before 'the rainbow children', which of course had a very strong jazz sound. 'the vault' does sound a bit random on the surface, but i think it's a good snapshot of where prince's sensibilities were going at the time.

New Power Soul - it just plain sucks. The only reason I don't get rid of it is because I do like ONE song - The One.

there are a few good songs on that one. i know it's fashionable to slam that album, but there's enough good material on that CD for me to consider it at least as salvageable as 'diamonds and pearls'.

I don't bash it because it's "fashionable." I truly do not like that CD. I've listened to it several times and just can't get into it.
Also, I happen to like Rave Un2 - that seems to be pretty unpopular on the Org.

The Rainbow Children- because I'm just too shallow to get past the Darth Vader duets I guess rolleyes

Dirty Mind- (disclaimer-NOT CAUSE I DON"T LIKE IT!) but because I rarely get the desire to hear any of these songs, aside from Uptown.
If you will, so will I

my apologies - i wasn't trying to accuse you of making a "fashionable" comment. i was just pointing out that it's very popular to razz that album. i can see how you could take my comment personally. it wasn't my intent. i deeply apologize, and humbly hope you accept said apology.

Aw, Anx, I didn't take it personally - no apology needed. I should have put a "lol" in there somewhere. Sometimes, it's impossible to read someone's tone in an email rather than actually hearing the person say it. (Did that make sense?) LOL

TRC Why? Because it sucks it sucks it sucks!!!! I can honestly say that there is not a track on that album that I can listen too. At least Rave, NuPowerSoul, & The Vault have at least 1 track that I like. I honestly cannot say that about TRC.

Rave, sigh, but I like the cover. My ex-husband took it personally, I think that the one Prince album he bought me, I hardly played. Old Friends For Sale...just boring. Although I can appreciate the genius of NEWS I just don't get into intrumentals. I love lyrics and he is my lyrical genius so...

Rave - I never thought I'd see the day he cover a complete bland wash up such as sherly crow.

This is one of the only P albums I don't own and have no intention of either.

Chaos & Disorder - Or affectionately known as "Cha-ass & Dis-Whore-der." Easily. Just about ALL filler shit to get out of his deal with WB.

Musicology

bad album, bad memories, horrible cover, annoying songs
with bad lyrics and wanna be hip grooves plus some lame
Erykah Badu rip off that doesn't work for fck and then,
surprisingly, there are two nice songs on it.

not enough to keep it from being his worst album if you
ask me. even new power soul has at least 4 very strong,
good songs on it. even rave has 2 or 3 classic joints..

but Musicology has absolutely nothing going for it ill

shoulda released an EP to tie us over. or thrown the two
or three half decent tracks on the internet.

oh wait, he already did release them on the club, months
before the album even appeared.

i'm done now. thank you

biggrin

For the record, the Vault was submitted to WB in final form in early 1996 as part of his settlement. It wasn't put together just before TRC.

As to the original question... I think I'd vote for Musicology. I've never been able to stomach listening to it.

Either Musicology or For You is my least favourite , both have a few tunes on them that have never really stuck in my head , thats forgiveable on a debut album but on an album 25 years into his career its very disheartening .
