What song hooked you on Prince?

For me, way back in '83, I didn't really care for "Little Red Corvette." I started to get into the song "1999", but the end of "Let's Pretend We're Married" hooked me in with no turning back.

Y'all?

When Doves Cry b/w 17 Days. So that's kinda cheat, cuz it was two songs all at once. razz

I'd heard Little Red Corvette and such prior to that, but didn't really get hooked until that single. biggrin

I bought the Dirty Mind record, I kept playing Uptown over and over, then I bought the Prince record and could not stop playing I Wanna Be Your Lover and Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?, by then I was hooked for life.

Same here, although I didn't get the single right away so I missed out on 17 Days until a couple years later. It was hearing When Doves Cry on the radio for the 1st time that hooked me.

It was the summer of 1984....When Doves Cry came out...I LOVED it from the first moment I heard it..then there was the b-side 17 Days...kept listening to it all day !
Around 1986 I lost interest when Parade came out ( I was too involved in HipHop and was too young to appreciate purple music and wasn´t really into pop), later rediscovered Prince when a friend of mine made a mixtape for me and took me to a live concert.

I think I appreciated the shear balls it took to record Head and Sister and beyond "shock value" or whatever you wanna cal it, they were wonderful compositions as well. That just made me think "Hey, this is my kinda guy".... wait, that sounded gay....

17 Days, although I didn't hear until much later at Prince Night (Berlin). Up until then I had been a casual fan, but when I heard 17 Days I was hooked. smile
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

I liked 1999 but I really dug When Doves Cry. It wasn't until Kiss that I realized I needed to start getting his albums. The rest is history.

I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Now eye was at the Purple Rain concert when eye was 4. But didn't really get hip to prince until the Batman soundtrack was released. I guess thats a product of being a child of the 80's. My earliest Prince memory was riding in the car with my brother and aunt and "Electric Chair" came on the radio, my aunt turned around and saw me singing word for word with the radio. "OMG, Travis u sound just like P". Then puberty hit and i ended up soundin like Lutha. omg

It took 3 year for me to really get into Prince! smile

Started with "Batdance" & "Partyman" in 1989...
...then "Thieves In The Temple" in 1990...
...and "Gett Off" & "Cream" made me become a huge fan in the autumn of 1991! smile

STILL WAITING on his second album. Then I went back and bought his first album and heard SO BLUE and lost my damn mind. I think it was 1980.

Don't appologize. There are some great songs on that album. I'm a fan of Strollin, believe it or not.
