Who is each genre's answer to Prince?

What I and a assume most people like about Prince is that he branches out into nearly every form of music. Soul, jazz, blues, rock and roll ,gospel, classical and several others. Despite the diversity of his music, he's still condidered to fall into the pop/soul catergory. What other artists are know to step out away from their genre's so to speak and write, produce, compose and arrange songs for themselves and others? Keep in mind, I'm not saying they are as good as Prince but I feel they are the most willing to take musical risks.

The first that comes to mind for me is Pharrell being hip hop's answer to Prince. DJ Quik is another underrated contender.

When it comes to an alternative/rock category, Trent Reznor is the name I hear the most.

Others?
