ran across this scripture, which immediately made me think of the song... 'cuz it's about 7 things that "stand in the way of love":

"There are six things that Jehovah does hate; yes, seven are things detestable to his soul: lofty eyes, a false tongue, and hands that are shedding innocent blood, a heart fabricating hurtful schemes, feet that are in a hurry to run to badness, a false witness that launches forth lies, and anyone sending forth contentions between brothers."

I knew that you mis-spelled it on purpose, because you seem to be an intelligent person and would never make such a blatant spelling mistake.

It seems like a solid argument... I never understood what "7" was about, but your assertion sounds very plausible to me.

The one thing that stands out in the song is the line:

"with an intellect and..."

Luther and others condemned the use of the intellect in matters of faith. I like the fact that Prince mentioned intellect in that it implies an investigation of issues rather than blind faith.

This is only my opinion though.

Read the book of Revelation and you will know what the song 7 is about.

Come on Prince even tells you to do this with his backword message in the lyric book.

whereas jesus commanded his followers to love god "with your whole heart and with your whole soul and with your whole mind"...

so to me, it seems as if intellect SHOULD enter into the picture...

i have read the book of revelation... what particular points do you have in mind? the number 7 figures in so many places... seven letters to seven congregations, seven bowls of god's anger poured out on the earth, seven-headed wild beast...

check out Revelations 20... very similar to the song :
"And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomles pit and a great chain in his hand."

and Rev. 13:
"And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy"

aw heck just read the whole thing, why not?...

I just wonder what Prince was thinking & why I think he is more "religious" than he used to be. Not really

interesting replies, folks.

the song is very atmospheric... a scene rolls out before us, armies marching feet. we are standing on the shore (of the revelation's sea of humanity?) and watching them fall... we will still be here, he says.

where would we go, otherwise? after watching the fall of plagues, deadly sins, or whatever it is exactly that is passing away...
