Do you think Prince is a snob?

I like him but I get this feeling he can be pretty snobby in some situations. I find that to be kinda unbecoming of him. But I guess when you are rich, talented and famous and can have any woman you want it starts to fuck with your ego. So knowing that I don't completly blame him but I just hope he is not like that in real life. biggrin

"Snob" is one of those loaded words when it comes to celebrities. The average celebrity needs to have some distance from the public, especially fans. So yes they will come off as snobbish on occasions. They just need to be more selective by definition -- there are not enough hours in the day nor days in the year to be a regular person with everyone that wants to talk to you. So that part of it is understandable, and in Prince's case -- he's one of those celebs among celebs, a "legend" people like Paris Hilton want to meet -- it applies on a high level. Artistically, he has been called "pretentious", mostly for his forays into more "serious" forms like jazz. Again I think that is loaded, although I do think Prince has overreached occasionally.

In the end, I would say Prince may be snobbish and even pretentious sometimes, but he's one of the few that can pull it off as if it was perfectly normal, given his talents and his work.

What an excellent response! Sometimes I forget how his life is so different from everyday people's. It would be unrealistic to expect him to act that way. clapping

i think prince is very private, and doesn't particularly care for the chaos of being among crazed fans or fame seekers, so he puts on a "snobbish" facade and appears stand-offish to keep people at a distance. other celebrities handle it differently - some better, some worse - but i think it's part of prince's persona/image, whether he likes it or not.

I know someone who has worked for him from time to time. He says that Prince is very leery when it comes to strangers. He has to get to know you a little bit before he becomes friendly. New band members are told to speak only when spoken to. Doing the opposite can get you fired. Same thing with extras when he's shooting videos (Which is how my friend came in contact with him). So no I wouldn't call him a snob.

nod Thank you! Yes I can see how he would be like that. After all I guess he is just the type of person where he has to know you more for him to warm up to you. I'm sure he is justifed in protecting himself from people he doesn't know. Can't really blame him now that I think about it....if I were in his position I would be the same way.

I don't think Prince is a snob. But if he would fire band members for speaking to him before being spoken to, i guess he wouldn't appreciate fans talking to him first either. I think the more appropriate term would be: inapproachable.
Of all the many times he stood near by at Paisley Park, i hoped that he would say something just so that i could respond. He never spoke and neither could i.
Except for the one time we simultaneously said 'sorry' to each other.

No, Prince is not a snob, but his greatness can keep him separate from us for other reasons.

And as mentioned in the naacp_vanguard2005 jam, Prince does say that: "the best thank you that i can give you really is to play music, so.. the less i talk the more i can play."

Prince's love and thanks for us is heard through his music. rose

I find that shyness is often mistaken for snobby-ness. Even though Prince is an international star, he could still be shy. I could also understand him being leery when meeting new people--wondering what their ulterior motives are, what do they want from him...as well as being a very private person. I wonder if that is a Gemini thing; I'm a Gemini and also private and very distrusful.
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.
