The argument can be made that she's the best contemporary artist since Prince, regardless of genre.

Maybe we should put this in a different perspective. Let’s take Prince’s first 6 albums and Me’Shell’s first 6.

P
  • For You
  • Prince
  • Dirty Mind
  • Controversy
  • 1999
  • Purple Rain

M
  • Plantation Lullabies
  • Peace Beyond Passion
  • Bitter
  • Cookie, The Anthropological Mix Tape
  • Comfort Woman
  • Dance of the Infidels

Clearly Prince’s first 2 albums are demolished by Me’Shells first 2 attempts. Lyrical content, Me’Shell Wins. Musical content I think Me’shell wins again. Prince didn’t start warming up until Dirty Mind and didn’t have a completely solid experience until 1999, 5th album in. Right out of the gate Me’Shell was giving you serious food for thought. Some will say, and I agree to a small degree that he last 2 efforts are a lot cooler than her first 4. Personally I love love LOVE Comfort Woman and Dance is certainly more focused than Prince’s N.E.W.S.

We’ll see what Me’Shells future holds. She may have just as long a strong streak as Prince had up until Lovesexy. She’s certainly capable of it.

Thank you Supa, that's the only way to compare the 2 that actually makes any sense. smile

well, when he stops re-writing I Hate U over and over and meriting it a spot on his albums, then i'll change my opinion....

I wish he would write I Hate You type material over and over. He seems to re-hash Emancipation material over and over lately with the exceptions of the Rainbow Children and N.E.W.S.. That said, Prince proved himself in the 1980s so I don't expect him or any musician to still be cutting edge when they've been in the business for damn near 30 years. We will feel the same about Meshell when she gets to that point as well. It happens to EVERYBODY. Comparing Meshell's music to Prince's late 2nd and 3rd decade is flawed because he had already peaked. If we compared Prince's 80-88 streak to Stevie Wonder's music in that decade Prince would win by a mile. The gentleman feautred in my avatar bucked this trend, but he slowed down at points during the 70's and 80's. Regardless, it's really a pointless comparison.

Supa: IMHO, the better comparison is:

P
  • Dirty Mind
  • Controversy
  • 1999
  • PR
  • ATWIAD
  • Parade
  • SOTT
  • Lovesexy

M
  • Plantation Lullabies
  • Peace Beyond Passion
  • Bitter
  • Cookie, The Anthropological Mix Tape
  • Comfort Woman
  • Dance of the Infidels

That is, Me'Shell's run in the last 10 years is as varied and surprising as Prince's 80's run, tho maybe not as great on the whole. IMHO it's the best run since Prince's 80's run.

We’ll see what Me’Shells future holds. She may have just as long a strong streak as Prince had up until Lovesexy. She’s certainly capable of it.

Right now, comparatively (and relatively) speaking, I think she's well on her way on the strength of Peace through Comfort Woman alone.

I'm comparing apples to apples, Princes first 6 albums and Me'Shells first 6 albums. Music is music regardless of time. A kick ass album is a kick ass album whether it came from the 60s, 70s, 80s or 90s. Straight out the gate Me'Shell had your brain reeling with thought. Her consistent lyrical content alone makes Prince look like a buffoon singing about cunts all those years.

And while you obviously don't appreciate her music as much as Prince's, if at all, her catalogue is uncompromised and brilliant. And as much of a pioneer as Prince has been in his career, I'm surprised you'd used mass appeal as a gauge of what is quality material.

Knock the woman all you want, she's a genius. Too bad you can't see it.

I like a lot Me'shell but I also think you have gone mad. Comparing Me'Shell's run in the last 10 years to Prince's 80's run...please! Sign o the times has more great songs than all her albums put together.

You also forget one thing: concerts! I saw her live two months ago, it was good but not great. She's trying to mix the 70's Miles sound with drum and bass, Although interesting, it was pretty messy. Not even close to Prince in its worst shape. My feeling is that she spends a lot of time polishing her sound in studio and that she surrounds herself with incredible musicians. Look at her last album, it's more a group project and it's not very clear to which extent she designed the whole thing.

You can compare the parameters of an artistic run without getting into a qualitative comparison.

Me'Shell has been able to meld and re-interpret soul, blues, jazz, rock and even hip-hop into a distinctive sound, much like P did with rock, funk, soul, pop and jazz in the 80's. But few here would argue that P's run is the best since Stevie's in the 1970's.

Me'Shell has arguably been the most creative and innovative artist of the last 10 years. As was Prince in the 80's. That don't mean Me'Shell's legacy equals or exceeds P's (as if it's easy to judge that!).

You also forget one thing: concerts! I saw her live two months ago, it was good but not great. She's trying to mix the 70's Miles sound with drum and bass, Although interesting, it was pretty messy. Good points, but she is going in a different direction these days.

IMHO Prince is the greatest live performer today and has been for years.

l/r:

I think the better comparison is Prince's 80' stuff and Me'Shell's 90's stuff. It is highly difficult, but not impossible, to compare their bodies of work and where they stand/stood in the landscape of the respective era.

As for Me'Shell not having a SOTT, what artist since then has an SOTT? But IMHO Bitter IS a masterpiece albeit lacking in universal appeal.

I'm with Supa to the extent that Me'Shell's run so far is composed of the same type of elements as Prince's 80's run.

I think a lot of fans of Prince tend to never see his flaws and while I will admit that I think that Prince is THE top artist to come out since himself, I think a lot of this reknown comes from his past work and not current material. I think that it IS accurate to compare Meshell's albums to the albums Prince released in the same time frame as Meshell's BECAUSE they were both subject to the same musical climate. Since Meshell was not recording when "Lovesexy" or "For You" was released why would you compare those collection of albums quantitatively to Meshell's run of recordings? Meshell and Prince were musical peers from her intitial release in 1993 until now therefor, regardless if Prince had peaked and was on "cruise control" in the 90's is besides the point...I think that if you musically put Prince's albums from 1995-2005 against Meshell's material, I think Prince may have a solid 2-3 discs of good material(out of all the albums he put out in the last decade) with Meshell having about 5 discs of good material having put out only 6 discs..

WRONG WRONG WRONG

The Times are different! Also the musical maturity that Prince displayed early on, people were not prepared to handle! He broke the Commercial ground for many after him.Meshell is sailing on the boat that Prince made! I'm sure she'll admit that herself!

Recently his work like "the Truth" "NEWS" and "ONE Night Alone"(Studio CD) & "Rainbow Children" have proven that,He's still in charge musically! Don't you realize Mile Davis BeGGed! To Record with this Man! THE MilEs DAVIS!

Think before you speak,Prince composes music in His sleep!

I loved Plantation Lullibies and a good portion of Peace Beyond Passion. Absolutely hated virtually everything on Bitter (except Wasted Time), Liked portions on "Cookie..", and hated "Comfort Woman". I havent' heard Dance of the Infidel yet.
