Musicology has no real melody... it is VERY funky but lacks melody... as does the rest.

I think his best melodies came pretty early.

The Beautiful Ones
Little Red Corvette
When 2 R In Love
I Feel 4 U
The Morning Papers
Shockadelica (simple but good)
Let's Pretend We're Married (also short but good)
Christopher Tracy's Parade
the end of Positivity "In every man's life there will be a hang up..."

A good melody can stand alone without any backing instrument.

Prince has done some great melodies, but lots of his songs--Musicology, Eye No, The Work, Cream, are not so interesting without the instruments behind them

Snap

Check out Prince's ballads -- some of the most beautiful melodies ever written. Every song on his first two albums have nice melodies, to say the least. Yeah, a lot of his "funk" stuff does lack a melody, but not all. "When Doves Cry" (for example) is pretty much a one-note melody throughout, as are a lot of his songs that sound interesting because of the beat and sound effects -- but even then, those songs have some kind of melodic "hook" (e.g. "Gett Off," "Erotic City," "Lovesexy," "Superfunkycalifragisexi," and on and on and on).

And besides his pure funk workouts which are more like jams than "compositions" (e.g. "Prettyman," "The Work," "Musicology"), Prince has hundreds of songs filled with long beautiful melodies. If you don't know this, then you're really missing out on a lot of great songs!

Am I mistaken, or has MJ never even written a melody? The comparison must be between Prince and Quincy Jones, right?

Uhm no...Quincy Jones never wrote a song for MJ wink

I think Prince's catchies melodies are Let's Go Crazy and 1999. Some songs grow on you but those captures you immidiatly

Oliver

I would have 2 add Diamonds and Pearls. It's a popular song but the melody is complex. If U listen really closely 2 it, U also notice how the drums play along with the melody.

By the way, as for melodies on Musicology, I'd have 2 say A Million Days is the only song that I can strongly credit. Please don't even mention Pimp...whateva.

being a songwriter myself, the melody of "the beautiful ones" is
pretty simple.the way he layers the melodies underneath the main melody
is a little complex.a better example of a "quite complicated melody" would be
"and god created woman" or "glam slam".
