"Joy In Repetition" Appreciation/Discussion THread

Please use this thread for the discussion/appreciation of the song "Joy In Repetition." Personally, this is one of my ultimate favorite songs Prince has ever done!!! I'd like to hear feedback from other Orgers on why you like/dislike this song and which version of it is the best (I myself have only heard two versions: the GB version and the live version from the "It Ain't Over" Aftershow CD.) ... the GB version is great, but I prefer the aftershow version both because of it's live energy and because--unlike the GB vesion--it lasts quite a while. Man, say what you will about Larry G. (I'll admit to hatin' on him plenty of times, just like we all have) but he POUNDS the bass like a MASTER on this track!!! And then, of course, there is P's guitar work...friggin' brilliant!!!

Also, for those of you "in the know," (you listening, Boris?) I would like to learn as much as possible about the history of the song (i.e., when was it first written, how many different versions--studio AND live--were recorded in what years, differences betwwen each of the versions, etc.). If you get the time, please see whatever you can find about the song in any one of these books (which I do not have) ...

Joy In Repetition was recorded on July 17 '86 2 days after Sign 'O' The Times, it was originally intended 4 the aborted Crystal Ball LP, but was left off when it became Sign 'O' The Times. This is definately in my Top 10. I really like the unreleased version that doesn't segue and u can hear the drum machine begin without all the talking like on Graffito Bridge.

Got to see it live at soundcheck in Mel 2003 and it was incredible. They played a small portion on the Today Show interview. It was much better than the It Aint Over version. I love the version from the Emancipation release show as well.

One of my faves as well. I love how it builds up to those two words. The song really draws you in as if you're there in the club. I love both ONA and GB versions even though I just received ONA recently(anniversary gift, damn I love that Woman!)

I totally agree, I have it on the Sab Boot which came out this year, The arrangement on it it very differnt from other live versions, Also Prince's solo at the end is good, especially how you uses his Tremolo bar on his Strat guitar!

I agree about the original version without the segue from 'The Ball' (Eye No/Alphabet St.) - but I guess it doesn't make that much difference, just a little, 'tidier'.

I really love this song. Guitar ain´t my favourite instrument, but when Prince playes it, it´s heaven. I love it. The guitar on this track gives it a great feel.

why don't i have something that i got to hear live. that was a beautiful distant memory, yet i was a metre away from him and it touched my soul.

That's what the song's all about. The build up to those two words. I'm not too impressed by most guitar solos but the way the song builds up is what makes it great. Definitely a top 10 P song. On the other hand, the live version is great and once you've heard the song alot and you're used to that build up it's good to have some great music too.

I love this song so much!

The guitar at the end is brilliant, and his gradual build up of
emotion through out the song is so profound.

He starts out singing in this mellow tone and by the end is screaming
those "love me"s . It really follws the storyline of the song which
I love in music. I can just feel this song when I here it.

My Fav. song as well.....yes indeed

I love it when Prince tells a story!!!

You can actually get a mental vision.....a sultry dim lit bar...
a man walks in, sees a girl, falls in love on site, sweeps her off her feet, romantically steals her away to the back alley.....desperatly wanting to know her name, it starts to rain and they kiss passionatly in the rain, as she whispers "Love me"

woo weeee.....I love this song wink

during one of the cellys, they played this song in one of the studios at the Park.....it was heaven sitting in the studio in the lil velvet chair, with my eyes closed listening to this play so nice and crisp and clear in the studio.

During one of the ONA shows I went to, it was unreal when Santana came out and played this with Prince eek

there are like 5 or more versions of this song floating around.
all tell the same beautiful sexy story jsut at a slightly different beat or speed, with the guitar solo longer or shorter.

somtimes I just put the song on repeat cool

One of my favorites!!!

I remember standing in line for the ONA show in NY and a guy in front of me asked what song I hoped that Prince would perform that night. Without thinking I said Joy in Repetition. I was in heaven by the end of the night because he performed it during the soundcheck and during the aftershow. smile

Glad to see this song gettin' some props!!! It rocks!!! I myself would love to hear the "tidier" version (without the "Eye No" crowd chatter segue) as well as any and all of the live versions you guys mentioned...unfortunately, bootlegs are hard to come by in Montana! lol

Great song...one of my all time favorite Prince tracks. So organic, so impassioned, so damn brilliant. Prince was at the top of his game on this track and its no surprise that it was recorded during his golden period. thumbs up!

This is indeed a great, brooding, moody song....But one MAJOR complaint (sorry, i have to nag about this), why the hell he put this splendid guitarsolo so deep down in the mix?????

I have a bootlegversion of this song where the guitarsolo is mixed upfront, like it should be: its one of his best solo's ever....
