Bono talks about meeting Prince in the early 90s and asking him about the word "slave" written on his face:
"There's no excuse in the twentieth century for intelligent people signing a deal they don't understand.

EXACTLY.

After saying that he would much rather be in a band than a solo artist because solo artists are too prone to indulgence:
"I think, in some ways, it's easier to realize a vision that's singular and in your own head, but it's harder to keep the vision going without argument. Look at Prince. He's one of my favorite composers of the twentieth century. I really believe in him. But he needs an editor. He needs a row. He needs somebody in the studio to tell him to f*ck off. 'And guess what? There's six great tracks and four of them are pretty average. I'm sorry, sir. Your genius was having a bad day.' Does he have that? No chance."

I have always respected Bono as a performer, as well as the body of work done by U2. I also have always thought Bono was cool - & these quotes prove that to me. he comes across as being very unpretentious, something that is EXTREMELY rare among "superstars".

I also liked elbib's post - funny!

RealMusician is so fuckin right... u cant control prince - prince is a genius and a real musician making real music as an expression of his innerself. You wouldnt tell Van Gogh that his sunflowers were looking a bit naff and he should maybe consider starting again.

Bono talks like he's some sort of wise, all-knowing, superficial human being - and always has. Fair do's he does a lot for charity, but he talks as though charity wouldnt exist without him.

Funny you should mention Van Gogh...Bono mentions him, saying that he didn't HAVE to cut his ear off to be seen as brilliant...he already was.

As far as your comments about Bono as superficial and God's gift to charity, well...that comment was spoken like someone who knows very little of the whole story. You've formed an impression...and in my impression, it's unfair.

If the post I read earlier is true...that Prince made a comment on his "Musicology" Tour to the tune of "I love U 2...but not the band" -- and if this comment suggests some kind of grudge, than I have to say as a rabid Prince fan that I take issue with his spirituality if it doesn't include FORGIVENESS, particularly for something that's not worth a grudge!

How many of us, as Prince fans, need the stamp of a Grammy to validate music as a masterpiece? Why should/does Prince need THAT? I love both U2 and Prince, and I think "Sign O The Times" is WAAAAY more innovative, important and wonderful than "The Joshua Tree" any day. Consequently, I'll take "Achtung Baby" over "Diamonds and Pearls." And so it goes...

If Prince still harbors bitterness over the 1987 Album of the Year Grammy -- and I don't think it's fair to assume that he TRULY does -- than I love Bono and U2 EVEN MORE for showing the true Christian characteristic of not having any bitterness back. In other words, I suspect that even if Prince walked around talking about how much he hates U2, Bono would still be telling everyone how awesome Prince is. I admire that. The fact is, I feel like I understand a little more now what Bono is about as a person. I admire Prince much more as a musician and artist, but have always held back on admiring him as a person. He's just been too elusive for my admiration in that area.

This could all be B.S., too. Prince may not even hate U2. And I'll still love both even if he does.

It was propably only a not-so-clever remark to emphasis that he meant the fans, not the band.

You felt that strongly about him for all this time JUST because of that? That wasn't hatred, that was a grudge! neutral

That aside, I find it ironic that all this time Bono held him in high regard and P was the one shooting his mouth off back then acting like a petulant child with that moronic quote. I always thought that was one of the lamest things he ever said - not to mention more than a little childish.

Still, times change eh.

-----
If P was being a petulant child then I doubt he would have given Bono the info on obtaining U2's master tape back. Bono has given P a lot of credit for that.

I just think P was pissed at the time. He really deserved that Grammy. I don't think you realize he has been nominated 30 times and only has six awards (LOL)

You obviously don't know me very well and presume too much too.

I recall U2 accepting an award - Grammy or AMA, I cant remember - and Bono mentioned Prince in the acceptance speech as the greatest song and dance man on the planet. Prince was up but lost with Sign O the Times.

you're close , I think he said "Prince could be just another song and dance man , but he's not , he so much more " . Prince really did deserve the grammy for Sign O The Times though , its full of excellent material , The Joshua Tree is 4 very good songs and the rest is just boring guff , such an over-rated album I think .

And with these remarks, my long-standing hatred for Bono comes to an end. I have hated U2 and Bono since 1987, when the greatest travesty in the history of the Grammy's occurred, namely Sign O' The Times losing to The Joshua Tree. Okay, I knew it was going to happen but damn it, that was Prince's shot at the best album, his most ambitious album to date (and still). Seeing Prince jilted in the audience as those wankers went up on stage pissed me off to no end. (And to paraphrase the man, Prince could do what U2 did on The Joshua Tree but they could not do Housequake). Anyway I have always thought of Bono as a pretentious, moronic airbag bastard since then (even though I did dig Achtung Baby) but now, I will forgive him.

Oooookay, you disliked Bono because his album beat out Prince's for an award that he had nothing to do with almost 20 years ago??!! LMAO!! You're talking as if YOU lost the award and that it was a conspiracy against you. Hopefully, your comment is all tongue-in-cheek!

I love U2! And Bono is dead on it. Now, all I have to do is get a ticket for U2's May 7 concert here in Chicago.

U2 is only the SECOND greatest rock band in the world. (Number One? The Rolling Stones)

Prince is only the GREATEST artist (individual) in the world. I've been digging him since 1978.

What happened to the right to dislike anybody anywhere at anytime for the most superficial of reasons? Is this not America? Is this not a democracy? Damn, I've disliked people for a lot less than stealing a Grammy from my favorite musician with a pretentious ridiculously overrated album.

But, as I said earlier in the thread, my therapist convnced me that my hatred stemmed not from the highway robbery that was the 1987 Grammys but rather Bono's insistence of wearing sunglasses that are way too big for his face.

I will not defend this anymore. I'm shallow, damn it! So sue me.

Spot on. Bono's alright, but his comment just shows him that he is himself accustomed to making marketable products only. U2 has no doubt experimented during their career, but Prince just pretty much does what he wants. He rarely makes compromises (he does to a certain extent from time to time, but he is the closest thing to an underground musician the mainstream market has ever seen - even moreso than i.e. Beck). If Prince wants to make a silly commercial sounding track, like "Silly Game", he does it because that's the type of music he wants to make. When he's not compromising, he's not compromising in any directions.

Since Prince based his whole career on not having an editor, it would be a big change for him if he had to deal with someone truly deserving of that title, i.e. someone who can veto stuff. I can't think of anyone who could do that effectively, given Prince's ego, history and intimidating talents. Thinking he could use an editor is not knowing him very well as well as disregarding the essence of his career, which is creative freedom. There are also practical reasons - few people can actually keep up with Prince. When you are prone to recording everything yourself in the middle of the night, you tend to be captain of your own ship for obvious reasons. What Prince can use and has used... is collaborators that are not afraid to speak out. He has benefited from surrounding himself with creative, knowledgeable musicians that have influenced his music and his taste.

At the end, Prince would not be half as celebrated if he had employed genuine coproducers consistently. Look at Madonna and how people believe she owes everything to her producers. For better and for worse, Prince is entirely responsbile for the records he released, and that will be an important consideration when all is said and done and it's time to say who truly expressed himself as an artist in our time..

well, okay then, but i think it's unfair to point to W&L (or Prince for hanging with W&L) as being the sole reason for the drop in sales post-Purple Rain. A large reason for the drop in sales was that neither ATWIAD nor Parade were musically "other Purple Rains". And in terms of quality, ATWIAD and Parade are right up there among his best.

musicology is a nice, safe pop record, you're right. i doubt that people would be raving about the tunes if they'd gone elsewhere, though. it's hard to say - sometimes other people do prince's songs better than he does himself.

won't catch me bitching about TRC. wink lyrically, it's irritating at times (and offensive at times) but musically it's totally outstanding on the whole.

but i agree to some extent - W&L certainly don't make the world go around. But they did have a hand in some of the greatest music our little fella's ever released.

C'mon now. ATWIAD is nowhere near PR or Parade in terms of quality.

I suspect those that feel he NEEDS W&L never really liked Prince to begin with. It's fine to miss them. Hell, sometimes I wish they would hook up again just for old time's sake and see what they could come up with. There's a difference though.

im going to agree with everything you've just said (except for the highlighted part..hehehehe.

and worship your statement about the three of them working together..i hate how people say, "oh..been there, done that"....and i guess they say it because prince himself has made comments to that effect in the past.

but, these people have grown musically.....i think it would be earth shattering to hear what they can come up with today. one song. just one song would please me.

all three are geniuses in their own right.....and nobody should ever deny synergy like that.
