Do you want Prince to use swear words again? If so,why?

I'm not talking about performing old classics live in concert again. The "real" version of Housequake is a prime example of a song with swear words that I'd love to hear again. Not that funky instrumental he inserts from time to time. That's cool but not the same as the "real" deal to me.

I'm talking about new music. For me, I don't feel that Prince needs to cuss. The spiritual/philosophical Prince is just as interesting as the sexual rebel Prince. Don't get me wrong,I'm not encouraging lyrics like "we don't give a duck". To me that's just silly but,it's his song, not mine.

I've notice that quite a few people here would break out in tears of joy if Prince stepped to the stage, said "Oww-ah","fuck" and "good night" and went home. He'd get a 10 minute standing ovation from some of ya'll.Hey,if that's what makes you happy, that's what makes you happy.

How important is Prince's use of foul language to you?

I just want him to feel like he can, and not refuse to swear cause of religious reasons.

I hear what your saying but what if he wants to stop swearing for religious reasons rather than feeling he has to? What I mean is, what if Prince feels a conviction in his soul about it rather than Larry Graham or whomever saying"You can't say 'I wanna fuck the taste out of your mouth',Baby Brother!"?

Depends on the context-if he is singing "Erotic City" I don't wanna hear "hump until the dawn, duck until the dawn, bump until the dawn, etc." However, I don't want the man droppin' f-bombs just to drop em.

I was never a fan of his excessive cursing like in Days of Wild, but few strong words here and there were fine.

He can use "damn" & "hell" if he's being political (like calling out that son of the Bush for screwing up!!!).

Prince can also use "jackass" if he's dissing the WB Music Group or speaking out against rap artists for their negativity. cool

It doesnt bother me.Making his shows more family orientated was a clever ploy to get more folks to his shows, his language back in the day was probably just another element to his "shock" factor.Besides now it would really just be unneccesary. If i want to hear him cuss i'll just go and stick on Days of Wild.

How many of you had this conversation?

"who do you like"
"Prince"
"isnt he gay?"
"dont think so!"
"i dont like him"
"he swears in his songs"
"really???" (look of interest on face) lol
Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

I can't see a need for gratuitous swearing on any new material, however I do feel a little frustrated about this "changing lyrics" stuff.

On one hand, he's boasting about being succesful with a "hits" tour, however on the other he's changing lyrics, and even meaning of songs sometimes becuase of his new beliefs.

I feel he either needs to turn his back on the past or leave the past as it is and play the songs with their original meaning and lyrics - one or the other.

***

He's 'boasting' about a succesful 'Hits' tour because his tour was the highest grossing tour last year.

That is fact, not conjecture.

The lyric alterations were minimal. They are his songs to do whatever he likes with. If people had been that bothered by these 'alterations' the tour would not have been such a massive hit.

I would certainly rather see Prince live with or without altered lyrics, than purchase over-priced, inflated 'fanzine' publications with numerous mistakes and pages missing. wink

I used the phrase "I feel", thus highlighting it was merely my personal opinion. I never attempted to pass this off as a fact.

Is this another example of org members being unallowed to express an opinion? wink

Again, I was merely giving my own opinon. Robbie Williams has had massive hits, it doesn't necessarily mean I should personally like them just becuase they're succesful.

If the size of the tour was what purely makes people follow a musician then we'd all have become Michael Jackson fans years ago.

Again, your personal opinion and you're entitled to it wink

"crime" is probably a tad harsh but yes muirdo, that was an example of changing the meaning of the song over something like "back when dick was bumpin' liz"

Besides, Prince is a walking swear word

I knew this was coming. In fact, I was going to put (in my last post), "don't ask which one..." But it's the one with four-legs, er four letters and also "DAMN!"

Agreed. And who needs cuss words when you've got a creative edge? He's still got that, so who cares about the cussin'?

I kinda feel that its his right to no cuss because of his own moral/religious views. However, i feel that when he performs his old hits, he should replace the cuss words with tamer lyrics. Just don't sing the songs at all if you'd have to replace some lyrics. cool

Couldn't care less if he doesn't write songs with cursing in again - I however still hate it when he changes the lyrics on his old material. Personally it makes a mockery of the fans who supported him all these years - a pious stance of "hey, I'm better than that now" means "hey, I'm better than you now" to those who dig the original lyrics.
You don't want to swear - don't perform the songs in with swearing. For someone who is and considers himself to be an artist, I wonder what he'd think if da Vinci had gone back and fixed the smile on the Mona Lisa before he died.
