I agree with Murph. Usher is what the "kids nowadays" listen to. Oh well. I do wish that celebraties would quit talking about how wonderful and hot Usher is. That is sickening. Ellen just went on and on talking about him on her show today, that surprised her guests with him actuall being on her show for about five minutes.

I was watching the VH1 Driven episode with Usher on it today, and they did say that Usher grew up listening to artists like Michael Jackson, Prince and Bobby Brown.

You act like the shit on the kid's last album was trash...The stuff he did with the Neptunes was cutting edge R&B that was better than average (You Don't Have To Call was one of the better songs that year)...You don't have to say you don't like Usher to impress the older Prince fans on this site...You should be able to like whoever you want...This constant comparisons to Prince is laughable...The artists the kid should be compared with are his peers (Justine Timberlake and the like). Prince is from a different era...

Like most popular albums Confessions is not even the young boy's best shit...I must admit that the reason why I know these things is because I'm a music journalist..so it's my job to listen to music that i normally might not pick up....But to simply dismiss the kid because he's young and happening is silly...And since when has it been a crime for artists to be high on themselves....that's part of being a star baby...whether you are talented or not....

Music doesn't and shouldn't really have an age on it. Hell my mother would by Nelly and Alicia Keys when she would buy her some old Ike and Tina. If you like it, you like it. I think Usher has produced some pretty ok stuff especially the previous cds.

Usher is quite cocky, but Prince was cockier, and even childish, in his younger days. Now, IMHO, Prince had far more reason to be cocky, because his skill set was vast compared to Usher's, whose skill set is limited (does a few things well).

But he's almost becoming too popular for his own good. Few crossover male solo artists have a long shelf life.

Dang, people hatin' just because an artist gets some acclaim after more than a decade in the business. People jump on him if he compliments someone, then they jump on him if he doesn't. Lose-lose situation. Do ur thing, Usher!! People don't have 2 like the music, but all the hating and bashing is just a waste of time and energy.

i like usher. i love Prince. granted i am still young and i love hip hop. but i don't really own any hip hop or R&B cds. I'm more into old school. still, what differnce does it make? Usher, IMHO, is a very talented artist who is happenin at the time, and frankly it would be considered by many ridiculous if he didn't win a single grammy. Prince has been around a lot longer and knows the game. their music styles r differnt too! And if Usher wants to be cocky an' all that jazz, then...oh well. I can understand why ppl would be upset with him and his 'im the best attitude." but really, with ppl my age, he is considered the best that R&B music has to offer at the time. If he wants to make a complimentary comment about Prince, then...alright.if he's bein fake, then it's his loss that he can't really appretiate the most talented artist out there.
Prince will still rule here.

The problem with Usher is that he is like a male version of J.Lo, yet he gets way more cred. He is like Bobby Brown for a new generation.

Can he sing? Marginally
Can he dance? Yes. Just as B. Brown and J.Lo can.
Can he write??? A bit.
Can he play?? Well, he can pose with a guitar and spin it real pretty.
Does he produce (is he responsible for his sound)? Nope.
Is he original at all? Not so much.

God, I'm glad someone here remembered that Usher can SING--unlike Bobby Brown and *most* of New Edition. Unlike most of the pop artists out there that bark their "lyrics", Usher does have talent.

To mention him and Prince in the same sentence is misleading. They are nothing alike as artists. Prince fans shouldn't by default hate Usher. It's like hating Yngwie Malmsteen.

Pop music in the past ten to fifteen years is just a continuation of the video age. Get a good looking front man or woman and surround them with talent. All of these artists fall off sooner or later if they don't have talent.

The hardest part is talented artists falling off of pop radio. Then they tend to disappear. When you realize that there is a lot of GOOD music that is never widely known, then you realize that pop music has been and will always be for a specific audience.

Usher, for who he is, and what he's targeting, is better than most.

But he'll never be a Prince.
