When Prince won his Oscar in 1984

What are your memories of when Prince won his Oscar aware for best score back in 1984? I was around back then but I don't remember much about it.

What did Prince wear? What did he say/do during his acceptance speech? Did he perform? Who did he attend with? How did the audience react?

Details please if anyone remembers.

I remember it. I sat in front of the television all night, waiting to see him. It was March, 1985. You think today's Oscars telecasts are long? Sheeeit...They lasted about five hours back. I was up until 1am (on a school night no less lol) But Prince was there with Wendy and Lisa, and when they announced him, I shrieked! I was SOO happy for him. He walked up to the podium, with Wendy and Lisa at either side of him, and he was SHOCKED!

Sorry...the longest Oscars in history was in 2002 and was 4 hours and 23 minutes. The 1985 Oscars were 3:45. I only know this because there is a big chart in today s paper.

I remember him showing up in his shiny purple hood and sitting in the audience all night holding a flower, or was that the Grammys? Hell, I don't know, he was on all the awards shows that year. On one of them, he performed "Purple Rain" and kicked down the microphone stand with pure attitude.

Yeah, I used to love "Friday Night Videos" too and when it went off, then I'd change the channel to "Night Tracks" for the rest of the night.

I wish to God I could've been around for this stuff, with P in his prime years and all. I grew up in the wrong decade. sad

I watched the premiere episode of 'Friday Night Videos' (for "Beat It") but watched 'New York Hot Tracks' every Friday after instead. That's where I saw Rick James and Prince videos for the first time. I remember the videos for "1999" and "Dancing In The Sheets" were played back to back. I think the show was suggesting something. wink

What I remember about Prince winning the Oscar is that I fell asleep and missed him! sad I was awake one minute and then my mom cam into the living room and said "did you see him?". That woke me up and I was like "huh?" and my mom was like "Prince won! You missed it?" I was sooo upset!! I must have fell asleep right before the went through the nominees. sad
I've seen clips through the years but I can't believe I missed it live.

We didn't get "New York Hot Tracks" down here until 1985 when we got a new local channel that later became "Fox". They aired it on Sunday nights down here.
