The STONES and ELTON JOHN. Plus DURAN DURAN and groups like the HUMAN LEAGUE and ADAM ANT. It was all NU-WAVE. Also the RAMONES and ZEPPLIN and FLOYD. Those were the bands my BOYFRIENDS DUG OZZY,AEROSMITH and DEEP PURPLE. IRON MAN was PRETTY BIG with BLACK SABBATH. Jeff BECK was ALSO BIG with them.

I discovered Prince when I was like, 13, maybe. He was actually the first thing I liked that my parents didn't introduce to me. Before him, though, it was all that stuff on the radio in the 90's...mainly 90's pop and alt-rock.

Culture Club & Michael Jackson music was what i was jammin before my Prince experience started too really kick in. Prince is the only artist i actually got hooked on for the longest. My friend & i use to argue about who was the better artist at that time (Prince or Michael Jackson). She knows now who is the better after years of stupid bickering.

I remember watching the Jackson Five on Soul Train when I was young and thinking MJ was going to be a big star one day. Then my lame white-ass would try to imitate the dancing (stuff like the robot, etc). It just looked like I was having a seizure. LOL

For me that was the INSTANT attraction to Prince music. It's not pigeonholed. I listened to a wide variety of music before I heard Prince. Once I heard him, the music appealed to me on so many different musical levels that I've never looked back.

it has always been Prince...but coming in second was Ray Parker Jr. I loved the way he was rockin that pink shirt back in the day.

I have to go with the rest of the top 40 answers...everything from WHAM!, Michael Jackson, and Culture Club to Van Halen and Aerosmith. But I was never into any of them the way I'm into Prince. Once the Prince posters went on the bedroom wall, all the others came off!

I was pretty much a Madonna fan for a good 3 years. Then finally picking up on The Godfather himself, James Brown. And as I was reading through a list of people he's inspired, I noticed Prince was at the top of the list. So, I dug in a little bit more after seeing him perform with Beyonce and became a full fledged fan after seeing him on the road for his Musicology tour.

Before Prince, I was very heavy into the disco era. Naturally, the Queen of Disco, Donna Summer, was my absolute favorite. I discovered Prince during the disco era with "I Wanna Be Your Lover" and could relate much more to him, I guess because he was a male and was very arrogantly flaunting his feminine side in such a strong, but still masculine way.

I guess you could say I traded one "queen" for another.
