TRC: PRINCE Smokes a JOINT and asks...

OK, so Prince smokes a joint and asks you, "What exactly do you have against The Rainbow Children?"

He goes on to say that It's in the spirit of LoveSexy and that the album has some of his best musicianship on it.

Whether you're a fan of TRC or not, What exactly would you respond with?

I have absolutely nothing against The Rainbow Children; in fact, I think the album contains some of the most compelling music Prince has released in years. I feel far more connected to it than I ever was to Lovesexy.

Now if he asked me what exactly I had against Lovesexy, that would be a different discussion entirely...

Okay, to be fair, I could have done without the Darth Vader voice. Still, I felt the CD was great.

I like TRC.

I think it's a deeply flawed Masterpiece (yes, Masterpiece).

For two reasons:

1) The narration. Narrating a concept album is taking the easy route. Just becuase the theme is confusing and wierd as hell , doesn't make it any less offensive to here narration--especially with Darth Vader at the helm.

2) It's hard to pay attention to a concept album that has too many momments that sound like elevator music, albeit good elevator music.

All-in-all, TRC is an underrated album. But to call it his best work would be overrating it too.

Anxiety

my only issue with TRC is purely asthetic and it's already been mentioned to death on this thread: the fat albert narration. i think it interrupts the flow of the album, and half the time i can't even tell what he's saying. if he were by some bizarre chance to re-release TRC without the narration, i'd probably listen to it ten times as much as i do now, which isn't very often at all (though i love the live versions on ONA and the Aladdin DVD).

totally co-sign this Anxiety....that 'voice' made the project disturbing 2B, my whole thing is how music resonates with B (or not) so TRC distracted B from music i could have easily Njoyed with a (voice)vibe that felt Totally out of Balance....i was @ a show 3/2/02 B4 i heard TRC, when i finally listened 2 the project several months later - i said some extra prayers....then i'd hush & hitt the scunion wink

Two thing I don't like about TRC;

1) The spooky electric voice...
2) The anti-sematic lyrics in some of the songs...

Futher it's a great album!

If Prince came up to me smoking a joint, my only response would be, "Oooooh, I'm gonna tell Jehovah!"

I am one of the outspoken TRC bashers. Understand this folks, I am only comparing TRC to the rest of P's work. It is a concept album in the veins of Lovesexy. But unlike Lovesexy, TRC lacks any powerful tracks. That s what is really lacking with the album. As a whole, I understand the cohesiveness but cohesiveness does not make an album. Ultimately, the music makes the album. There are a couple good tracks. 1+1+1=3 is decent but pails in comparison to like tracks like Lets Work. Its a little funky, but still preety generic. The Everlasting Now and Last December are compelling but fall short of the level emotional impact Anna Stesia and I Wish U Heaven generate. The 1st 6 tracks are very well placed and cohesive, yet just OK to the ears. I could ramble for days about this CD. Trust me, I have thought alot about this album and will endeavor to gather more intense feelings for it. Im grateful to have it because IT IS THE MOST CREATIVE WORK FROM PRINCE IN QUITE A WHILE. I just think it slightly missed the mark on becoming an all time classic FOR ME.
(Insert something clever here)

TRC is more the opposite of Lovesexy than was the Black Album....where Lovesexy was positive, inspiring and inclusive...TRC was angry, depressing and divisive....

i can see that. i don't know so much about the "divisive" piece (though, yes, i've heard the arguments and they're valid arguments indeed), but i do feel like TRC is a pretty dark and angry album, especially when compared to lovesexy, which is so light and playful and joyous. there's even a lot of giddiness and fun in the black album, which at the time was supposed to be thought of as such a "negative" album. heck, sounded like he was having a good time to me. of course, by today's standards, the black album is nothing - barely even risque. i like the darkness and the anger in TRC, but i don't really think of it as an uplifting feel-good piece of music - whereas lovesexy is just plain infectious to me.

I don't know if I'm agreeing with you just to do it, or if it's becuase I"m tired of disagreeing with you, but LoveSexy is just plain infectious.

ALthough when I first listened to the album, it was in the shadow of SOTT so I din't care for it at first.

TRC started out interesting--much better than Rave, but after two or 3 listens the Darth Vader Narration became too much. It always spells doom when an album's first listen is its best.

SammiJ

the only thing i'd tell him is to stop fucking around with his mic effects...
i could do without the voice as EVERYONE else said - but if he truly insisted on narrating the album i would much rather hear his smooth soft voice instead of whatever the hell that was.

edit: and that whole thomas jefferson voice has GOT TO GO.
Creee-peee shit.
