Year you became a Prince fan

What was the year you became a die hard fan? For me it was 1993. I always liked his songs on the radio when I was growing up before that expecially "Theives in the Temple" but that was the year I really got into him.

Die-hard, hmmm, 1995? A proper "normal" fan in 1993.

I don't htink I am a die-hard fan anymore though. People tend to grow up, I am not anymore walking around with my top three shirt buttons openly exposing my top three chest hairs.

i bought When Doves Cry in '84 when i was 12, and a few singles after that.
it was 1988 when i became total die hard. hadn't seen him in concert (i live in Scotland and i was too young for my parents to allow me to go to London in '86),and Channel 4(along with the rest of Europe) broadcast Lovesexy Live. That blew my mind and changed me forever. To see someone on stage with that confidence, that talent (guitar playing! piano playing! the screaming! the dancing!), and pull off a show like Lovesexy. Whoa.
music for me, untill then, had been black and white. Lovesexy Live was like seeing a rainbow for the first time, with colours i never knew existed.
i'm off to watch it now. i feel all nostalgic.

Ha ha, that made me laugh. You've no idea the stuff i had to put up with in high school for liking Prince. Almost weekly beatings. When you've got him though, no one can touch you.

1984. I just turned 11 & got hooked big time as soon as I saw When Doves Cry video on Music Box. He's been number 1 at the bank for me ever since. Because of Prince I discovered the funk music of Sly, Stevie, Curtis, JB etc - for that alone he is the daddy! biggrin
The Funk, the whole funk & nothin' but the funk, ya dig?!

I'll be honest,this year.

Ok im 18 and all my life i've been exposed to spice girls and mutherfukin britney thinkin that was what music was. I never really started listening to music until grade 8. But my mom and dad play rolling stones and beatles alot so that's kinda what i grew up with.

THroughout the 90s, prince got like no attention and i used to think he was just some gay guy from the 80s that disappeared afterwards.
When i started collecting Madonna stuff like 5 years ago there was a song done with Prince on her "like a prayer" album

So i asked my dad, "whose prince?" and he was like "some guy that writes filthy songs." and that was that.

Then i seen him quite frequently on my favorite music video show "MuchMoreRetro" with his videos for 1999, Rasberry Beret, When Doves Cry, and so on.
Then like many newbies to prince i seen his performance with beyonce at the grammys and loved him and wished beyonce would get the fuck off the stage so prince could do his thing without her.
Then i bought all his albums, yes all of them and became broke but it was worth it
The End

Christmas of 1984 I received 1999, Controversy, and Prince

(no way my parents were buying me Dirty Mind, and they couldn't find For You)

Uhm... I became a normal fan in 1999, but a huge fan in 2003 really.
But not because of the music he did those years, it's because I started discovering more of his old songs then.

I can pin mine down to an actual day. March 1st 1985, the day before my 15th Birthday.

I was on a school field trip to a Museum in London; a 2 hour drive from my School in Essex. I did not have a Walkman so a friend lent me theirs. The only ones he had were Purple Rain & 1999. My initial reaction was, "Uhrgh... Prince is crap!"... yet by the time we had got back to School that evening, I was converted and singing the songs out loud... much to my fellow pupil's annoyance.

lol was it 1984? if it was, then I was 12. I saw the commercial for Purple Rain & that was it, that man was toooo sexy. the last scene when he was looking into the camera w/ the light behind him, uummm...the following yr. when I started buying his albums I noticed that he had songs from yrs. past that I loved.

1982-83

I actually really liked "I Wanna Be Your Lover" but didn't know Prince sang it or anything about him when that song came out. Then I moved to an Air Force Base in Germany and didn't really hear him again until 1999 came out.
