Prince wrote "17 Days" for Brenda Bennett, one third of Vanity/Apollonia 6 (she was a smoker). So since the song was originally for her, that's why the smoking line is in there. Prince didn't take out the line when he sang it. The Org is the short yellow bus of the Prince Internet fan community. | |

I don't know why it would offend so many people if Prince did smoke cigarettes. Hell, it's not illegal. Non-smokers act like smoking is the ultimate sin. I get so tired of hearing "You know that will kill you, don't you". Of course, I reply "Thank you for sharing that with me...I've been alive for 37 years and I've never seen any of the commercials". Maybe the girl smoked and she left him with nothing but two of her cigarettes (no need to post about the song being written for Brenda again, please).
I saw a picture of him Dirty Mind era where he looked very high. Doesn't mean anything, but he does reference weed a lot. I wouldn't be surprised if he'd done it.
