Either Don Kishner's Rock Concert or The Midnight Special (was that with Wolfman Jack?) singing Dirty Mind. First time in person was Lovesexy Tour in MSG, NYC. "I do not understand how anyone not named Grace Jones was ever allowed to think of themselves as "fierce." - Sasha Frere-Jones

Amazing how you remember the specifics...I have scant memories of Diamonds and Pearls and 1999, I'm not sure which video I saw first. I first saw him in the flesh in 2003.

If you mean a picture, I first saw him as the Rude boy, with the rain coat and wet looking hair.

i was 8 or 9 years old and it was the summer of 1979, and i'd just come home to indiana from a visit to my grandparents' house in kansas. my mom and i were staying up late watching TV, and on the midnight special (or don kirschner, i forget which), they played the "i wanna be your lover" clip and i remember my mom and i thinking it was a cool song, but the guy performing it looked like an absolute freak and a half.

Though I'm sure I'd seen him before then,(because when I saw the pic, even though the caption called him "Mr. Squiggle" I knew who it was) the first time I remember seeing Prince was in the candid celebrity photo section in a copy of Sugar magazine when I was 9 years old on my first trip to England. This was a week or two before my tenth birthday, so it was in March 1995. We are stardust. We are golden.

I was at work & saw a pictue of Prince either inside a magazine or on its backcover. I thought something like "Who's this gay guy"? I know...I know - shame on me. Later on (1984) before going to see "Purple Rain" I purchased the cassette. There I was 31yrs old & feeling like a school girl. My son Gabriel was under 3yrs old. He heard the songs so much he began to call Prince "Purple Rain". How cute was that!? I went to see Prince at the Nassau Coliseum 84/85 and from then on I've been in deep admiration for Prince.
