"Purple Rain" is a tour de force for Prince and pop music. I pointed out that when the papers were saying that Eminem was the first to have a top album and movie at the same time Prince already did it twenty years ago. This is when "8 Mile" came out and no one was really talking about Mr. Purple.


Good for BET that they finally caught-up now that's it's safe to. I wonder if they would've aired videos for "Dirty Mind" or "Sexuality" when they first came out?

But I'm glad they did a piece on the movie. Maybe they could've mentioned how the lovely Warner Brothers wouldn't pay him to participate?


I need to get my copy!

I'm 29 and I remember seeing "Sexuality" back in the day only on BET. (Surely not on MTV, which, at the time, hadn't even begun its love affair with Michael Jackson yet, and he was the first black performer to break through on that station.)

I'm sure BET played "Dirty Mind." I saw both the V6 videos on BET. Later on in the years, I remember Video Vibrations doing a Prince marathon, complete with all Time, Family, W&L, A6, Sheila, you name it videos. BET had mad love for Prince back then, when their shows Video Soul, Video Vibrations and Video LP were on. Those were the days.

There used to be a show on the USA Channel called Night Flight that played a lot of Prince associate videos -- Vanity's "Pretty Mess," Jesse Johnson's "I Want My Girl," etc. -- all kinds of stuff. Finally we now have more music channels that do these things.

P.S. I got 10 for 10 on the quiz. razz ...props to BET.com


edit: oh yeah, and how can "Computer Blue" be the least liked Purple Rain song out of all those taking the poll? Come on!! These ppl must never heard the song then.

This was excellent. It's about time that BET gave the man some serious props. I remember as a kid watching Prince videos on Video Soul and Video Vibrations and seeing videos and getting facinated by them. If it wasn't for BET, I would have never seen the Dirty Mind, Controversy, Uptown, Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad, Sexuality and Automatic videos cause MTV never played them. Good for BET.

Prince.org is a cemetery where folks mourn Prince instead of celebrate him and his music. Last time I checked, Prince isn't dead yet.

Me too. I forgot that Lake Minnetonka was a real lake, although it was not the lake featured in the film. I also thought that Billy Sparks was the real manager of 1st Ave.
