Heavenly

Michael Bland
John Blackwell
Sheila E

Sheila E is better as a percussionist.
Michael Bland sounds like a drum machine. He's drumming is so tight and that's why I think he's better.

I still can't get over the too-straight-drum-machine-insult on courtin' time. The song could swing I am sure but not with THAT click-track. Hey, maybe he just forgot to replace it with the live drum track... what I am trying to say is, there is wonderful use of drum machines joint 2 joint is one example, but some songs need live drums.

Anyway, my opinionated ranking would be
1. Michael B
2. Sheila
3. Blackwell.

What is it about their playing, technique that causes you to say Sheila E., John Blackwell or Michael Bland?
Do they play things that others can't? Is it their power, strength? Their rhythm, timing being right on-in the pocket?
Showmanship?

If you donĀ“t agree, take a listen to the first 30 seconds of "shhh" as featured on "The gold experience".
NPG, second version, was the best band Prince ever had.
