Guide2Prince.org shut down

Just a quick note to let everyone know that Guide2Prince.org will be shut down from January 31st 2004. Deane (the owner) was contacted by the Pailsey Police and told to remove the pictures, reviews and ratings. He's putting the domain name up on Ebay once the site is closed.

[This really bums me out. While I don't know all the details, the site's content seems completely lawful to me. Prince might not like the fact that boots exist, but that doesn't make it his legal right to censor discussion of them. I'm feeling Uptown deja-vu... -Ben]

this is a real blow...that site was essential reading...

That really is a blow. The site never advertised for trading bootlegs, so I dont see what the problem is.

quite agree - don't think prince has any idea how a regular diet of quality boots means he shifts his increasingly second-rate recent stuff.

once again, prince's heavy-handed tactics have alienated another fan (i notice on the site the owner says his Prince official collection will follow pretty promptly onto Ebay)...

It's not only a blow; it's also a childish reaction, compensating for the fact that his new records don't sell. And don't come up with "he's a true artist he don't care"-routine. He's got bills and people to pay, so even he needs money.

It won't get him more NPGMC-fans cause a lot of people are already put off by the JW-nonsense and the fact that they paid 25 dollars for a bible-studygroup and haven t gotten much of the music... the reason why they were actually subscribed.

It's sad to realize but the guy whose music I love since I was a kid, seems to be more of an asshole then I thought. Or he is surrounded by assholes...

Apparantly he doenst' realize that his live-concerts and the boots, are the last life-lines for many fans because it's the only field where he still makes the big difference with most other musicians. Many of us buy the new albums out of some loyalty and a faint hope for that one record that will blow our minds; although we haven't had a mind-blowing recording since what... lovesexy? TRC being a dimm light in the dark.

This makes absolutely no sense to me. The disclaimer on the home page of the site clearly states its agenda-- NO profit is being made from it and NO information is given on the whereabouts of purchasing any boots. Doesn't Prince realize the repercussions of closing something that's soley designed to inform those of us who find pure joy in his music.

There's nothing illegal on g2p, the problem is that ISP's often don't want any trouble... when they receive some sort of cease and desist letter they'll pull the plug.
Sites like this should be hosted in countries where people aren't as easily intimidated by some fancysmancy lawyer's letter.

seems like there is a legit complaint from prince about the site. although i do not agree with what he did. but it seems as though that site is set up for the sole purpose of bootleg trading, no?

I wish one of these website operators had the money stand up to Prince's gestapo tactics and take him to court. Maybe if Prince lost thousands of dollars (if not more) in a lengthy court battle, he would figure out that he is legally wrong.

I would not be 1/100th the Prince fan I am without hearing all the live and unreleased material that I've heard. I feel bad for Prince because he just doesn't get it. He doesn't understand that these sites make him money in the long run.

Or maybe he just doesn't want people to hear his unedited live stuff even if it does cost him money. He has a right to this opinion, but it is still wrong to bully small time fans into taking down their websites when they are doing nothing illegal.

BTW, I wish the operators of Guide2Prince.org would save their entire site in a big .rar file and share it on the Royal Hub, so at least fans still have access to the information.

There is another bootleg guide site that is even more current and I love it and use it most every day. I hope Prince's people don't find it and shut it down. I won't put the name here, but it is a great one.

I mean i payd for the NPGMC and there really isn't happening ANYTHING! except for somebabyclothes to wear, some 7 lousy video's to look at, some excerpts, and now and then a reflection of 3 songs, and mostly the choice of those are not all that great, considdering Prince being a songwriter who almost released over 1000 songs alone...
damnit. I CERTAINLY am not going to extend my membership.. i REALLY DON'T LIKE the NPGMC. The sites ugly, it lookes dated, and it's so empty and cold! No Prince to be found or any sign of life. Even the design is awefull, the house looks ugly and sooo tasteless... yuck!

It isnt. I am a lawyer (dont all boo and hiss) and cant see anything illegal in that site. I also dont understand prince's motives - nothing new there - he likes being an enigma methinks - I mean after all a lot of the stuff he does are just to say fuck you to everyone - his whole career has been a lesson in doing that - assless pants ! shorts and braces ! adam ant style warpaint ! stockings !

Sad news indeed. I used the site a lot in the past few weeks to verify the cool stuff I'm downloading here and there.
Is there a way to save the site's contents? Maybe someone can contact the owner and ask him to share all the info in another way, via p2p or something?

What has happened is that Prince has sued two main sources for proof that his material gets bootlegged.

If he's really concerned, he needs to be going after the Sabotages, Premiums, etc.

If he'd only allow concert taping and free trading like Phish, The Dead, etc.

nooo!!! hopefully nothing happens anyplace else...g2p.org was one of the first places i went to in order to learn about bootleggage.
