The real reason why Prince was using that scooter is posted in the NPGMC News section 2day:

"October 20:
Tidbit from CHINA: That photo circulating of PRINCE on a scooter was part of a joke he played on the band. Claiming he had "the dopest entrance planned 4 the show that evening", he drove up onstage reciting lines from the movie Purple Rain."
