Mandy Moore has mined more than three decades of pop music for the set of cover songs that make up the aptly titled Coverage, due in September on Epic. The teen singer has completed recording and mixing her third album with producer John Fields (Andrew W.K.), with the first single due in August.

Among the Seventies chestnuts that Moore has recorded are Elton John's "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters" and Todd Rundgren's "Can We Still Be Friends," along with an unspecified Cat Stevens cover. The Eighties are represented by XTC's "Senses Working Overtime," the Waterboys' "The Whole of the Moon" and Joan Armatrading's "Drop the Pilot."

"Coverage is something so special to me," Moore said via Web post. "Something I could not be more proud of. A project that is full of passion like I've never experienced before. It is a compilation of some of the most incredible music I have ever heard in my life, and the fact that I got to record these songs is still unimaginable to me. This is a big step for me, this record."

In addition to the roster of songwriters, Moore has enlisted Evan Dando, Semisonic's Dan Wilson and the Rembrandts to add vocals to the album, with the New Power Generation band providing some musical muscle. Coverage will be Moore's follow-up to her self-titled 2001 release, which posted solid, if unspectacular, sales. But with Mandy Moore, the singer chose to separate herself from the teen pop pack, eschewing its hyper-produced sound for a more varied pop palette.}}}

Moore has placed snippets of three of the Coverage songs -- "Can We Still Be Friends," "Senses Working Overtime" and "Drop the Pilot" -- on mandymoore.com for fans to preview, with the promise of additional sound clips.

As for Moore's acting career, she is about to leave for a three-month film shoot in Europe. In the meantime, she'll have a starring role in the summer release, How to Deal.

The reason it is weird is because it doesn't say "Prince's New Power Generation band" and I don't think the NPG is famous enough to warrant a write-up without the Prince mention.

Who are the NPG???
The line-up is changed from cd to cd. The only constant member of the NPG is Prince.

Actually i think it IS our NPG. Anyone who knows the album's producer, John "Strawberry" Fields, knows that this was his project all the way. For starters, he is a HUGE fan of XTC and The Waterboys, not to mention Sir Rundgren. John is close with Phil Solem from The Rembrants, having produced their contribution to the XTC Tribute album, "A TESTIMONIAL DINNER : THE SONGS OF XTC" some years back.

The Minneapolis connections are many, of course:

He, Phil and Michael Bland (from the New Power Generation) have a side-project called T.H.R.U.S.H., I believe. Fields is also a pal of Dan Wilson's from way back and engineered the last Semisonic record, "All About Chemistry"...in other words, he pulled in a bunch of his friends and put together a pretty ambitious little album.

This one definitely rings a bell. Correct me if I'm wrong but I recall reading an interview with Karl Wallinger some years ago and he revealed that this song had been intended as a tribute to Prince.

Years later however, Wallinger would do a u-turn on this and claimed that "The Whole Of The Moon" had nothing to do with Prince and that they had spontaneously come to him whilst sitting in a restaurant (he quickly wrote them on a napkin). He also said the lyrics were in fact about his girfriend.

If the link is Michael Bland, perhaps the NPG they are referring to is Michael and Sonny???

it seems that somehow Prince cant avoid being close to teeny-bop singers...I hope it isnt true

I read about this on teenpeople.com and there wasnt any mention of the NPG

First of all,as a lover of all things Pop, I must say ofall the Teen actsout there, especially of the "girls", Mandy Moore is actually pretty good.

I like her style.Shehas evolved quietly and subtly(unlike some nameless others) and has branched into film slowly but assuredly. She has alovely, if lightweight voice, seems genuinely nice , and is very,very pretty. What's not to like?

Anyway...too bad Prince didn't write a song for her. A catchy pop ditty, like he used to give to Sheena Easton back in the day. God I miss that.

Anyway,I would have bought it anyway as it sounds like an intersting covers project with some thought behind it.

Im sure its "our" NPG, there is no other and they are really tight musicians no matter which version they are. (Unless it's just The Game Boys,then Mandy's in trouble)
