Prince does play the saxophone...

From the official website of Candy Dulfer: http://www.candydulfer.nl...ad.asp?p=4 [dutch language]

Let me try to translate that:
{{{Candy has responded to a question i asked her, if she has ever caught Prince playing a saxophone. She told me, that Prince has let her listen to a tape where he actually did play some saxophone. She said it didn't sound that terrible, and said laughing that she hoped he wouldn't anymore, because then she would be out of a job. She thought if he gave that wind instrument a try, he propably would master it in no-time.}}}

She also guesses that Prince will come to Europe with his Tour, but nothing was planned yet.

Prince actually confirmed this a few years ago when asked if he had ever played the sax. He said he'd done so on a few tracks, but prefers others playing the saxophone parts.

If I remember correctly, the Brass was one of the first instruments he played at his middle/high school. I think it was in that early early interview with his high school paper.

Still it's nice to know, when our bodies wear out, we can get another

I do believe you are correct. I also think that his schooling on the horn probably has something to do with his fascination with including awesome horn parts in many of his songs.

That's interesting that he admits to not reading music well. But I'm not surprised. After all, why would he need to be able to "read" music when he is the one who creates the music. Besides, Prince has said that many times new songs just basically flow through him... I mean, the man can basically hear an entire song in his head from start to finish. If someone is gifted like that, why waste time writing down notes and reading them... just hit "record". smile

many pop/rock/funk musicians cannot read music.
You know, he plays by ear, no real need to read music for him.

Prince is not alone in this respect – Paul McCartney, for example, also claims not to know too much about *written*
music. He plays & records it – and lets others write it down. Hell, Prince even has (at least HAD) folks at PP who actually typed out his lyrics... by listening to the newly made recordings! I once knew someone who worked there & made this observation. This was in '95. :O)
Free the music.

I'm sure about it, like i once mentioned before, that we all have recordings in our possession of Prince playing the Sax (on several tracks at least)! Can't think of any title right now, but i'm sure going to try to find out.. Especially the official released tracks where there's saxplaying on it, and where is nothing about it in the credits...
Did y'all know that the saxophone was invented by a Belgian guy named Adolf Sax? Been in his small but cute museum once.. Hard to iamgine what the first saxophone realy looked like, compared to the ones we all now from now.
When Mr Sax invented the "thing" over 150 years ago (it was patented in 1846, it was initially designed to help singers stay in key... can you imagine?
